Jyl

I am glad that people are starting to DM test breeding dogs. More people should. I have a german showline male that has DM. He was diagnosed( thru my vet and OFA) in March 2011. This is a devistating desease. It is hard to see him decline like he is every day. His mind is strong, just not his body.

My female, the one in my avitar, is DM tested. She is a CARRIER. She will only be bred to a CLEAR. It is such an easy test to do. The price is not that bad either. It is $65 thru OFA and $45 from Animal Genetics.

KOODOS to the breeders that care enough to test their breeding dogs.

I am doing it today!! I just found out about the test on another posting. Thanks for the update!

My dog, Ingo v Wiesbaden, was the first GSD to receive a DM certification number,  DM-GS1, carrier. He was tested 7/28/2008.

This was in response to someone who asked how long the test has been available, I don't see that post now.

Thank you Blitzen! I will give her lots of hugs :)

Mindhunt, Thank you. I got your PM.

To everyone else who has or has had a dog with DM, My heart goes out to you and I am so sorry for the heartache you are going through or have gone through. All we can do is give our beloved dogs our best while they are still here with us.  THe thought of letting go of an otherwise happy, alert and healthy dog is just so hard...

Starcharr
I a so sorry to hear that Shelby has not responded better to the various treatments you have tried. I have been wondering how she was getting on.  It's good to hear she is still happy and bright though.

Have you seen the 'Biko Brace'? It's something I came across and saved info about, as I am inclined to do, hoping I will never need it, but knowing I can lay my hands on it if I do. I honestly don't know of anyone that has used it, so I can't say whether it is useful or not. It mechanically helps to 'snap' the back feet into the forward position when they are walking. Logically I can see how it works, and there are videos of it in use. If you google it I expect you will find the videos. If not I have a link. I don't know, it might help you keep her on her feet a little longer.

I wish you both nothing but good things together in such difficult circumstances.

Abby

My first GSD a sweet active female, had DM. She was lucky. She lived to 13 years and that was when the big decline started and I chose to end her life before it got really bad. Terribly hard decision to make.

My current girl was tested for DM using OFA and came back N/N. Yippee!

RIP my sweet Anja.  Last week you traded in your wheels for your Wings.  You are now running and jumping and enjoying a new life with all four legs.  We kicked EPI in the butt, but DM kicked ours.  We gave it a good fight for a year and 9 months since "probable diagnosis".  You left me way too soon at the age of 9, but I am very proud and honored to have had those 9 short years with you....................

My swabs are being sent out this week.  Thanks for the reminder.  Everyone should do it.  It is a cheap cheap test.

And I am very sorry to hear about Anja.  She is beautiful
