Sierradi,

Your Lexi is a thicker version of my girl- but they could be twins!  I was told she was a bicolor, however, if you are telling me you would refer to Lexi as a blanket colored blk/rd then I will have to re-assess.

Sheesh.  How many pounds is your Lexi?

A lot of dark black&tans are erroneously called bi-color, which is genetically distinct, and recessive to the B&T gene.  Two B&T colored dogs can produce bi-colored pups but two true bi-colored dogs cannot produce a B&T pup.

The male that the OP posted and the female "Lexi" that was added in the thread are examples of dark B&T's.
The two dogs that Ambii posted are bi-colored.

Again, this is not just a matter of "personal preference" in labelling.  Bi-color is a distinct genotype from B&T.

My pup at 15 weeks of age - a true bi-color.  A little tan on the cheeks, jaw and chest, some tan on the legs, and tan around his butt.  All else coal black.

A good rule of thumb that I use anyway is to look at the belly.  A true bicolor will have a black belly.  A dark B&T will typically have some tan hairs on the belly.  However, this is hard to tell from a traditional "stacked" photo.

SchHBabe,

Oh my, that Diesel is a looker!

Well, now from what you said re black on the belly makes me pause again when deciding what my girl s/b called b/c she has a black belly but gold fur in the groin and armpits from up the legs.

He is a Blanket Pattern. Some refer to this Blanket as a LARGE saddle, but most descriptively, It is called a  Blanket.

The second photo is an old photo but Rajah is a bi-black.
The first photo is Zeta, a Blanketed Black/tan.
Sorry I am having some difficulty getting the pictures in here like I want.

Weezy.

Weezy, SchHbabe, and Sierradi-----  all good stuff!  You are making the distinction more clear now between the blanket coat and bicolor.  Thanks!

And SchHbabe- the genetics info is indispensable!

Take a look here: www.shawlein.com/The_Standard/07_Colour_&_Pigment/Colour_&_Pigment.html

There's a pretty good definition of a Bi-colour and the different extents.

This is the pedigree of the 2 boys pictured, which should also give you an insight into the Bi-colour gene www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/540547.html

ok- so Ambii- the chart you shared with us did not include the PANDA!  And I am not trying to be funny here because I have seen it on other charts....  Just wondering out loud...
