I saw a reference to bite box training at Mike Diehl's website and was wondering what it was.  Can some explain?  Also, I saw his version of the dreaded "table training" and found it intersting that it the same method we use with all dogs sans the table - i.e.teaching the dog that he/she can move the man with a strong bark.  Granted, depending on the dog the man might be moving in a prey fashion or fading an agressive posture...

Ah, the one link to the video was not working but the one titled "FULL VERSION VIDEO OF SZEM" does.  So now I have a few questions, primarily, why?  This doesn't look much different then work done starting any dog biting - so what does the box do?  From my (uneducated) view, it looks like it only sets the dog up to have the sleeve fed to it - what am I missing?

thanks,

the purpose of the box is to develop a solid bite. the floor is slippery and therefore the dog must have a strong, solid grip to keep the bite. If you go to  www.eurosportk9.com site there is a full explanation.

K9sar is correct. It also helps promote good barking and the dog learns that good strong barking is rewarded with a bite. Eurosport uses this method a lot and I have seen Mike Diehl use the box many times with excellent results even on a young dog I brought up.

p.s. Cledford - The other video was an embedded video which I am correcting now. The download was a longer version of Szem

Would the  slippery floor thing be the opposite of the theory behind setting a bite using a harness or flat collar or similar to it?  I.e. the dog grips and the helper pulls away with the sleeve while the handler/line handler pulls back on the dog via the line attached to the harness or flat collar - therefore the dog has to bite down or loose the grip.  Why would one be better then another?  I guess they are means to the same end, but are they related in why the work?

Also, I'm asking these questions from a sport dog perspective - although I know Mike  trains a lot of LE dogs.

Very correct in theory on the bitework. The dog has slick surface flooring on the box so he quickly learns to bite hard or lose the sleeve (or pillow).

Think Nate will chime in here shortly to give a little more theory behind the box since Mike's club uses it quite intensely and have perfected the methods
