That condition is called ileocolic intussusception. And yes it is a real possibility with these symptoms!!!!
Make sure your vet checks for this. It is a condition where for unknown reasons intestine rolls it self into itself like a telescope.
Dog will die if not fixed in timely fashion!!!!!!!!.

It sounds like bloat or blockage to me, or at least that needs to be ruled out...that is life threatening. Glad to hear the dog is on the way to the vets, please let us know what happens. jackie harris

Hi all,

Wanted to give everyone an update on Max.....

Turns out his prostrate is swollen and his smaller intestines are slightly inflamed! We had 2 females come into heat back to back and the vet believes this was more than likely the cause. The heats caused an increase in testerone and sexually frustrated him. His urine test came back negative for any signs of infection and she did xrays/sonogram to confirm there was no blockage.

He is on a blood crossing antibiotic (just in case) and on a mild pain pill. If he does not improve in 2 weeks, then she recommends neutering (which I have no issue with).  She was very glad that we caught this early, and did not wait until today to take him in, she said he would have been in much worse pain and harder to examine! My husband said that Max complained the whole time they did the xrays/sonograms.

He seems better, and is eating and though still being cautious, is back to guarding his stick and his eyes are brighter.

Now we just need to watch him and hope that this clears up, and get our 2 females spayed in the next few months. All of our other Shepherds are spayed/neutered... Just these last 2 girls... and perhaps Max.

Thanks for all your kind words and thoughts! This was a scary episode, since you know something is wrong but don't know what it is... and then there is the fear the vets won't take you seriuosly... I know my dogs, you know?

Thanks for the update!  I'm glad it was caught and he's feeling better.

Don't want to make light of something so scary, but once he's back to normal, may we have a field day with jokes about horny boys?

Oh no, joke away! Poor Max has been the butt of them at our house, he just barks at us and runs outside!!
