I think when you have kids, and when you've had a chance to see how different dogs with varying prey levels react to kids playing around (not with) these dogs, it is easier to see how prey drive can cause discernment to go down the toilet.

only fortunate enough to have one child. When a cherished dog made prey with her, the misdirected drive was dealt with quickly. No need to discuss which method was employed, but the child thrived and so did the dog. It could be said that he discerned it was not good to cross a determined human pack leader.

Koach, you understand what I am talking about, and it is as far away from the SCH field as can be. Folks know well what they have been exposed to.....Thumbs Up

by Gustav on 28 June 2013 - 17:06

@ Blitzen, I understand ......but it's difficult to give you a pass because you have American lines, because almost all of the German Shepherds we had during Vietnam Nam war was American bredWhat Smile, and I have been told numerous times on this forum that the oldie dogs were more mythical than what old timers say....so your lines should have plenty of discernment.Teeth Smile.

gsdstudent,

You see, with a discerning dog you would not have had such a decision to deal with. No correction would have been necessary. That's the missing link Gustav is talking about.
It's not a trained thing, it's innate.

BUT, I've only had GSD's since 94, Gustav. I'm still in the learning curve. Give me a pass................

Gustav, could the the type of training where we require the dog to blindly obey our commands thus acceling in sport be a cause of what you believe to be a lack of discernment? Are we punishing our dogs for thinking? Thank you sir for starting a thread where we can learn, thank you  Koach.

Maya has been sprayed by a skunk twice. I am thinking this is never going to end. No discernment to speak of. Or, still too young. Hoping it is the latter.

Possible reason for not chasing the wrong prey;1] discernment? is there really discernment on a conscience level in dogs? 2] is it a learned behavior thru environment? 3] low drive; some dogs never chase anything; 4] never exposed to prey objects; 5] something mystical about the child or the dog. 6] something mythical about the dog or child. A very serious subject with only a little attempt a humor above. The GSD leading the police to a house fire is that discernment? The dog who is aggressive  towards a stranger, is that discernment or suspicion?  I have not use this vocabulary  before and want to understand.

Gsdstudent, That's what most of us are struggling with, I think. Trying to come up with examples for something we are not clear on definition in the context in which used. Please, somebody clarify. Thank you.
