How do any of you know what this dog was doing before the photo was taken? He could have been yanked around in a circle or jumped from a table for all we know. I wouldn't do too much chest thumping assuming your own dogs can't look this bad given the "right" set of circumstances. Note the lead is very tight and look at the position of his head. He very well be turning to the left as the photo was taken.
Daryl, why don't you put one of your own dogs on a lead, gait him out fast and then pull up hard on the lead or reverse your direction and then yank the dog so he pulls up quickly. Or run the dog on a serpentine path rather than a straight forward path. Let us know what you see with your camera. I seriously doubt this photo was taken with the dog gaiting unrestricted. Something happened to alter his movement just as the camera was snapped. If this happened while the dog was gaiting, it would be a miracle if he could walk let alone gait. Cow Hocked!

by GSDguy08 on 04 June 2012 - 21:06
Are cow hocks genetic? Or how do they happen?
by Blitzen on 04 June 2012 - 21:06
Genetic.

generalizing...........
showlines tend to have more of the the sickle hock fault and working lines tend to have the straight hock flaw... I've seen many of both have cowhocks. The issue is that both show and working have flaws.......
Why don't showline people comment on the short, upright forearms and straight hocks when a working line dog is stacked for comments on this board?
Ibrahim....
Most of the GSD's in America are pets or companion/protectors (bark at door when someone knocks).
Some are shown in different venues - AKC, UKC and SV
Some do (sport) Obedience, Agility, Rally....flyball, dockdiving....
Schutzhund is big in some areas, but in other areas is few and far between.
Many GSD's also do therapy/hospital work.
Some do search and rescue, drug detection, and other nose work.
A smaller some do police protection work.
Some are herding animals.
Sorry don't know the order.....

I think it is hard to tell from a still pic if a dog is a hock walker or not. CJ looks like he might be from the photo, but when his foot lands, he lands on his pad, not his hock, and pushes off. Pictures can be deceiving.
Not a hock walker

Yes, I have a ton of them...He has 2 bad elbows- can you imagine how he would move if his elbows werent DJD1..! He does have correct movement, however, which is maybe why it doesnt seem to affect his gait. He moves from the shoulder, not from the elbows.
Next post below are CJ movement photos from baby through awkward gawky 1 yr old shots -small pic was when he was in complete suspension- grabbed it off a video..as you can see, he always lands on the foot pad, even though looking at the still of his first gait pic I posted, he looks like he could be a hock walker/runner. He is not as you can see, so, a lot depends upon at what stage of gait a pic is taken, which might make a dog look like a hock walker/runner, when it truly is not.
