  Cavalier

With all the up and downs these pups need to be eating often more than less.

Do you have bottles and formula for puppy feeding...buy a kit from vet if you dont
I would guess you have back up formula

if not goats milk is the best/or at this point any puppy formula with closterium in it...your reg vet should have some until you can find it at your petstore..
newborns have to eat very very often...not just once in a while..someone said on other thread , puppies are usually stuck to the nipple with it itheir mouth or sleeping..or they become dehydrated also..

Keep us informed and someone will walk you thru it ...I have never fed a pup manually..so not able to tell you what to do there.

it is diffiicult to feed newborns but you need to do it
Are they eating?

nursing most of the time and sleeping..??

gosh I am worried and now we have another db member with a dead pup in canal and in serious trouble.

let us know
Jenn:

Have you ever fed newborn pups /manually
I have not so I would not know how other than I would not want to tube feed but if have to?
Gosh this is like grandparents in the Hospital pulling their hair out.

No, YR. I am a bit of a...naturalist. I have never so much as supplemented a puppy, however, the one site I posted on the other thread, the Lab site, helped my very good friend save the rest of the litter that I mentioned above. I do not have any hints about bottle feeding if they are not readily suckling. I did bottle feed some infant kittens and rabbits, but they were eager to eat. I haven't ever had to do it on a newborn who didn't already know "how" to eat. Tubing can be dangerous; you can easily suffocate them if you don't know what you're doing.

I've fostered quite a few orphan puppies and kittens that had to be brought up on the bottle.  It's not too difficult but it is very exhausting.  You must remember to put them in a natural position for a PUPPY, not a human.  Hold the pup with your hand under it's belly so that the body is level.  When giving the bottle, tilt it at about a 35 degree angle to bring the pup's head up just a bit.  This helps prevent aspiration of the milk.  I don't much care for the "puppy" bottles.  I prefer a human baby bottle and a size one nipple (the old fashioned cheapie nipples, not the orthodontic ones).  If the pups are having a hard time or get frustrated, take a safety pin, heat it with a lighter, and put in another hole then try again.  Add more holes as needed but do one at a time until you find what works best for your litter.  The pups will self regulate so let them eat whatever they want.  Don't force them to take more.  They can need burped afterwards since this is different than taking milk from mom.  Simply bring the puppy up to a 75-ish degree angle and rub the back for a few moments.  If nothing comes up, the pup is probably fine.  They tend to let you know if they need it or not by fussing very loudly despite not being hungry.  They'll need to eat every two hours around the clock.  This time starts from when the first pup has fed, not the last puppy.  Find a way to ID each puppy that works for you so you can make sure each puppy has been fed.  Set an alarm for feedings.

Now this is VERY important so please don't forget.  The milk MUST be warmed to 95-100 degrees fahrenheit.  If you give milk that is cooler than that, their body temperatures will drop adn the puppies will not be able to digest the milk.  It will sour in the stomach and they will die.  Their bodies cannot warm the milk naturally until they can regulate their own body temperatures.  You must also make sure the puppies themselves are at a proper temperature (should be 95-99 F in newborns).  Cold puppies are physically unable to digest food, even if it is at an appropriate temperature.

The pups can't defecate or urinate by themselves either so after every meal take a warm cloth and stimulate their genitals.  This will cause the muscles to relax and the puppy will potty.

For formula, I find either puppy milk replacer with colostrum or goats milk to be the best substitute.  Not all milk replacers are created equal though.  Don't grab the cheap stuff.  I find it makes for very fussy babies with loose stools (this can put them at risk for dehydration).

Tube feeding certainly is faster from what I've been told by people who've done it but I personally prefer to go with the bottle.  It allows for proper bonding such as they'd get from nursing with their mother.  Also less risk of a mistake causing a fatality.  If you're wanting advice on tube feeding, someone else will have to give it.  Personally, I'd ask a vet to show you how.

Good luck with mom and pups.  Been waiting for news all day and hoping no news simply means there is a very tired owner getting some rest before updating.  The vet that sent Reign home needs fired!

Good advice Stary, I have hand raised lots of puppies through the years and I usually whep 8 - 12 litters of rescue puppies

a year.  For hand raising I always use Avent bottles with #1 nipples.  I also make my own formula using goats milk.  I

certainly hope all goes well for this girl.  Sometimes first time Moms with a large litter can have problems.

Timing on this was perfect.  Someone posted this photo of their puppy feeding box.  They can bottle six puppies at a time this way.  If the link doesn't work, I'll attempt posting a picture.

Judy and starry eyed:

Please stick around as I am like Jenn  If they dont let me show them the nipple and kind of orchestrate the first 10 hours of just making sure mom doesnt lick them to death and they can eat, I have never supplemented or fed one.

I do start my puppies very early on slushy mess as they are very hungry healthy huge pups that need the nutrition and mom gets not quite so many TEETH pulling her apart.

BUT it is a personal thing...I miss all this but do not miss the Blood PRessure and the anxiety that went with it..

most of my births were normal but you still have baited breathe went hours go by and nothing.

I do have oxey handy and amoxicillin on hand at all times...and puppy formula

You mentioned the brand and nipple number and that is very important so hope our OP has all that..

I am getting anxious...my coffee cup is full and waiting..I just now got my first cup ...

What is happening????  waiting and praying
I never even ask her where she lived..does anyone know.. Friends would be helpful at this moment if anyone lives near...
I know she works all her dogs and has several so maybe someone will step up to the plate and come help her?

I might be able to find out.  I've seen that pregnancy picture posted on FB.  If I can find it (and which group it was posted on, I might be able to find where she lives if the information is public.  I'll give it a shot.

Finally found it.  Lucky I happened to see the picture yesterday or I'd have never been able to find her.  She's in Virginia Beach, Virginia and her name is Victoria Harter.  https://www.facebook.com/vharter25  No updates on her page or on her photo on Everything German Shepherd's page either. :(

by stary_eyed_angel on 06 January 2012 - 21:01

If you have a FB page, you could send her a message and ask if they're going to patent it and if they'd like to go into business with your song.

I'll stay around to help with this dog's litter if needed but I'm not the most welcome person here and will be attacked sooner or later.
