The more I think about it over the years, the more I'm amazed how hung up we are on color. It's not a working issue. It's a preference. Max himself didn't seem to think it was a huge deal; just that white dogs (e.g.) would show up too much at night to predators, etc.
In Thoroughbreds, lately we've been seeing some "white" TBs leak into the industry, whereas supposedly there never was such a thing. Well, it's actually a masking trait (not true base color), much as our white and panda probably are, but nevertheless these horses ARE registered as TBs and they are RACED (i.e., their work). Unfortunately so far they don't have the best bloodlines so they are no champions, but they are allowed to work and to breed. Indeed, they don't all breed true - it's just a mask.
I'm not sure I'd get all into "odd-colored" GS but I don't think they are necessarily a detriment to the breed. I'd be much more interested in the health, temperament, STRUCTURE, and working ability. Frankly, many of the "white" GS I've seen look far more as a GS should in structure than anything today we pass off as high-class - German or otherwise. I'd love to see that structure back in the breed as a rule than being called "low-bred" dogs.

SECONDLY COLOUR DOES MATTER!!!!! hOW COULD YOU NOT THINK THAT COLOUR DOESNR MATTER. IF YOU THINK THAT THE WHITE SHOULDNT BE ACCEPTED, THEN FIRSTLY YOU CLEARLY DO THINK ABOUT THE COLOUR, AND ALSO THEN, DOESNT THE PANDA HAVE A LOT OF WHITE ON IT AS WELL.
THINK BEFORE YOU POST!
ONCE CONFORNTED WITH RUDENESS, I UNLEASH IT, OH YEAH.

Also, please read my post again - I don't know how I'm figured as favoring or NOT favoring white and/or panda, etc.
And while we're at it - please defend how color does really matter. There are some cases that it does, but not many.
As far as identifying the breed - yes, I could see that (Border Collie people take it to extremes saying they don't care at all how the dog looks - including ear set, etc). But, that's not really important.
As far as horses - you'll find much the same issues and genetics come up. It's a myth, e.g., that "white" is dangerous for the dog, etc, or even that it "dilutes" well-colored genes. White is not albino. It's really just a marking - and thus, cannot turn black to blue, etc.

#1, I see that no-one acknowledged PAULIE'S post about Malcolm Willis' genetics book (which I'd LOVE to read).
#2, thank you, Sunsilver, for your reasonableness.
Heck, until I met my husband (who likes Dachshunds), I NEVER knew there were "dapple" or "piebald" Dachshunds. I'd only EVER heard of and seen at shows red, B&T, and the wire-haired salt-pepper. Suddenly after he came into my life, I'm spotting weird-looking Dachshunds everywhere - even down the street we lived on the other year! Those show people sure kept it secret really well - until the Internet showed up. Those dogs are not "proper", either - and many actually DO have health issues tied to color - but I don't know if there is all this talk about them being killed and "not a real Dachshund" and not purebred.

So, I took my dogs for him to evaluate. The first 2, he says no. The third, that I bought and had doubts about, I took to a show (Stone Mt., GA. specialty show) for him to see. He looked at the dog, looked at me and said: "Rik, are you really so fu****g stupid that you think this is a "show dog"
I am so stupid that I must think so, else why do I waste his time. So, I did not run away crying. I determined to learn what a GSD was. The next dog I presented to Jimmy Moses, he finished to an AKC Championship.
So you decide, what do you want. Do you only want endless stupid talk, or do you want to be a serious GSD person.
You decide. You ask many serious questions, line breeding, show equipment, etc. and get many serious answers.
So what is it to be for you. Are you serious, or just looking for entertainment.
JMHO,
Rik
