I get all of that. Let me put it another way - what would be the downside of a WL x SL mating? Why don't more do it? What would be the goal?

Going back a few years it can be seen in the bloodlines on this database that many dogs that were considered to be working animals have many show dogs of the day behind them. If this could done then the question is why can it not be done today. I think that the answer comes down to knowledge.

It seems sad to me that there is not more cooperation between "lines". I don't understand that. I also don't understand the lack of linebreeding. Outcrossing generation after generation is never going to produce consistency.

not a breeder but I venture to guess that on average you would not get many progeny that would be put forward in the show ring and you would not get many progeny to make it on to the sport podium.
as far as regular working dog people they imo will work whatever works and do not pay so much attention to the ped because selecting from a group of dogs the vendor presents (SOP for many working dog purchases) I can absolutely guarantee a formal pedigree analysis is not part of the selection process.
admit I am just guessing.
