Yogi presented a reallife experience of slgd drives, and I have seen exactly the same thing, myself. My showline did better in obedience training when we did the protection first. But sometimes he'd get too over top in drive, so it was a ballancing act.
If you want to do this, 'Let's forget all about bloodlines, let's rise above that crap for once and talk about the breed in general and how they are marketed to the public and potential buyers.' , that would be a whole different thred.

How does this all shake out? Where does the beginner go that wants to get a decent showline with drive? I'm an enthusiast. I've spent years figuring things out for what I like. Where does the new person go? There's certainly no constructive information here to get things going.
Big picture..............
The SV has made progress. When the performance scores are posted, those with the 5/5 are automatically sought by the breeders inclined towards working ability. Along with this comes some additional focus on training. I have a VA dog that under normal training can do a 3/3. Is it worth bringing the dog up right and seeking those trainers that have better techniques to get my dog not only passing but prevailing? You bet.
Now that there's some focus on performance, the bar has been raised.
OK, that's Germany. I don't/can't go to Germany. What are we doing in the US?
All is not lost. Both USCA and the GSDCA have stepped up to fill the void. USCA has selected judges for their sieger show that have a working background. Take this past year for example. Both judges have a breeding program that produce dogs that work. Check their results, they speak for themselves. Poke around their kennels and I bet you find a few dogs that hold their own in a club.
GSDCA came out swinging this year. Want to learn a little about working ability from one of the best? Just stand ringside and listen. VA dog, VA dog, and here's a VA dog that won a performance award. His daughter did too. Apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Not rocket science. If you want working ability, you go to the family of dogs that produces it, get a good example and train it right from the beginning.
Point here is; you don't have to go far to find what you want. It's out there. You can't find it on the internet. You have to look for it.

My first introduction to GSD was via a SL dog in the early 80's bred by Malcolm Griffiths of England. The dog was a grandson of the 72 Seiger Marko, and he came through Kai Vom Silberbrand. The dog had a off the charts hunt drive ( seeing him search for a dime in the bushes was awe inspiring ). He was also very protective of his family which he simply conveyed by body language ( you just knew he meant business ). I understand that the Marko and Frei lines were not so much promoted in the 80's. Now we are only seeing the Black and Red dogs

I think we are close to adding Odin to the list. He's at least a good dog to see in the pedigree.

What about V 16 Cary v Fiemereck or are you only looking for living dogs?

Joker v Arlett was a well controlled and a hard biting male. He was a grey dog by Uran out of Medea Schwarzen Zwinger who was a grey female. He made V 16 at the SiegerDieger Show. I liked him very much.
