If the comb tooth is really a pattern, could it not BE brindle?? I have seen it on a Husky I used to groom and on a shepherd we had in for boarding. From what I saw it went away after a really good brushing, bath and force dry.

I personally think the brush coat is kinda like a cowlick on a human..so to speak - it is the way the fur lays on the skin....

Just my opinion....

It's noteworthy to myself, in that I have owned and raised many sables, and visited with many other sable owners, yet I've never seen the pattern previously. Not even on the internet, that I can recall. If anyone else would share pics of theirs (Jen?), I'd be grateful.

mudwick...Thank You...there is clearly a difference..winter to summer...and you are right that winter coat is gorgeous!

Here's that same dog's full sister, just as dirty and unbrushed as he was, but clearly not unusual.

And here he is again, with no evident pattern until he was at least 9 months old. The pictures I posted on page two of this thread were at 10 months and 12 months age.

Unfortunately the dog that was here is now a working SAR dog in Canada or else I would definately post some pictures.

That is extremely interesting about the unusual pattern. It would be interesting to see if he himself reproduced the pattern in his offspring.

Not the best, clearest pics, but they're the best I can find on short notice. I brush my dogs, these 2 more than others due to the density of their undercoat, so it's less apparent than if you don't pull out undercoat. If left unbrushed, it's much more evident. I have noticed it on a lot of sables w/very dense undercoats and never thought anything of it.
