I am happy to tell you how I know. When I purchased Maxi from Julie she was sent confirmed pregnant not long after she arrived I noticed she had PF. I was a licensed vet tch for 15 years and new what it was the second I saw it. At this time there was little info on how dogs got this. As far as Jaguar I knew the women who imported him from Germany she only lived about 30 minutes from me and we were friends at the time I had just moved to the area. When your breeder was told about Jaguar she was over the top furious because she had many dealings with his breeder in Germany and I was there for that conversation.

Just to clarify I re read the email between me and Prince's breeder. The breeders exact words with regard to Prince's being diagnosed with fistulas was " I have not heard of dogs with fistulas for years and years"...FWIW..

If  you are talking grandparent that explains a lot;  that 3rd generation if there is anything bad to pass it sure seems to happen then.  That's the shit's.  Boy talking about burying your head in the sand.  Well Ruger 1 there may be your answers.  But it still does not mean you can't manage this conditon;  I know it can be managed with proper care and knowledge.  Best of luck  Nan

For what it is worth; I tried all of the foods you listed except Earthborn and NONE of them worked for my dogs, and at that time I had 5; they all looked like hell, rotten teeth or teeth were in the process of rotting; lots and lots of stool, one day runny the next day OK, the next blow out squirts, etc, etc.  I finally gave up and this is why I  went to raw, no more problems, no more dentals on my old guys, my 13 year old girl was having to have a dental twice per year at $700.00 each dental my older skinny boy at least once per year; the list goes on and on of problems on kibble alone, now I never did try feeding kibble one meal and raw the next for convenience; that might help or at least be better for Prince.  I know some people on this forum do feed both and I stay away from canned anything most of the time because of the salt content.  And canned salmon is rich.  May be one of the culprits.  Do a process of elimination if nothing else try to remember what worked best for him.  BOL  Nan

PS:  It is possible that fish or any kind might be the culprit, food for thought.  Another reason why I like raw, you have total control of everything your dog(s) eat.  Everything.  What about Honest Kitchen?  I had great luck with it and again you have total control of what he is eating, not a lot of unknown extras they don't need or use.  N

This is a discouraging bit of information. There is nothing to be done about it now, but at least I can know what I am dealing with..Thanks you Alaina for your posts and Pm's..

I have never heard about 3rd generations being more susceptible to hereditary diseases and issues..Has anyone else heard of this??,,,

I am very excited about talking with the holistic vet again today. They are very supportive of raw diets and said that they will be happy to help me make the change that is best for Prince..:)

Thanks

Maybe not all things are passed on thru 3 generations but inheritible diseases, HD/Ed/DM/Eyes/cardio/thyroid/VWD/ can and likely will be passed on from 3 generations; grandparents are very very dominant.  Also temperament/structure/movement/fear aggression/drives, etc. things like that.  SOMETIMES comes through more than the direct parantage.  Amazing, huh.  Great days ahead,  Nan

just as an FYI...out of 3 dogs that are non related in any way all 3 of mine cannot process fish...even left overs from steamed salmon would give them diarrhea....i have never tried canned salmon because i did not want to kill them..LOL..

Hello,,Today we go to the holistic vet,, I am anxious for them to examine Prince and give me their opinions,,Prince has been doing well. The 3 small fistulas have closed a tiny bit and the area appears much less swollen. I am still hoping that they are caused by an anal gland issue. We will see...

I am very interested in talking with the vet about nutrition/possibly raw..I called our local meat supplier and lamb is running $5.79/lb >Ouch<...I told him I wanted to buy a large quantity and he suggested buying an older sheep??,,Is sheep going to be different then lamb???,,Never heard of eating sheep...

Thanks for all the encouragement and input when I was dealing with the initial shock and concern..I will update later...Thanks..:)
