I'm not even sure what to say....

Considering that the GSD (like all breeds) was created by a mixture of several different breeds, with misc coat colors and textures/lengths....it is not surprising to see old photos of the "beginning stages" of the GSD creation.
Dogs of misc colors, misc body types etc....
Again...this was the "beginning stages" of the GSD creation...where the mixtures of specific breeds were still in the first several generations.
BUT....over 100 yrs have come and gone of pure bred breeding's.....the "chance" of those "beginning traits" have long since been buried.....of course, unless....a "mixture" is introduced again, with the same characteristics. (ie..Dutchie or another same type breed)
This is why I believe...only by true genetic DNA profiling...can the possibility be proven factual.

as they say here in the mountains "I may have been born at night, but it wasn't last night"

I'm really not into breeder bashing either, so I am trying hard to come up with just the right words to describe what a POS I think this breeder is, that won't sound like bashing.

I'll have to get back after I give it a little more thought.

Neat picture.  Looks like a smooth collie dog to me.  Collies come in merle....

I doubt there were Scottish Collies herding sheep in pre-war Germany.

I knew a old farmer named Merle. But that doesn,t make him a German Shepherd.

by eichenluft on 02 June 2011 - 11:06

doesn't mean the merle dog is a GSD either.  Collie or not, it could have been a "farm dog" which many shepherds used.  Just a mutt....not a GSD.  Looks more like collie in type than GSD to me.

The site it popped up on said it was a dog used in the creation of German Shepherds. I just Googled "MErle German Shepherd" and that popped up... thought I'd post it.

I was thinking what Eichenluft said - the dog reminds me of a smooth collie. Except for those ears. But saying "oh it has big pointy ears so it must be a german shepherd" is like saying "that dogs black, it must be a lab mix". But then again, I don't know much about Smooth Collies, any collies for that matter, so I can't say what they looked like back then.

It's very possible that dogs of Merle coloring were used in creating the GSD, like Brindles were. But that doesn't mean they are magically going to pop up after YEARS of being gone.

Haven't visited this thread in awhile.  I started it because I was surprised over a brindle gsd.  Did not intend for anyone to get "bashed".

actually the ears are "collie-like" too - tulip-shaped.  Many collie ears, even today, stand erect when not "helped" with glue.  And when they do stand erect, they look much like these ears.  Not like GSD.
