Good morning, Deanna. I'm sorry, but there honestly is no "simple and plain" explanation. It's an extremely looooong list of compatibility between sire and dam that goes into it, for me, anyway. I'm a bit OCD about it. I spend months if not years, sometimes, worrying about the right match. I'm sorry; I really don't know what I could say "simple and plain" besides the obvious........that I thought the two would produce well together.

Jenni,,As I said, it is no big deal,,,I was not really interested in the exact reasons for your breeding, as much as I was wondering about why breeders choose to breed WL and SL crosses,,We can leave that for another thread though,,lol,,,It has probably been talked about one hundred time before and I have just missed it,,,

Deanna, the dog is not a sable. It's a black and red, that happens to have some very attractive black ticking down the throat and chest. My old Rikkor Bad-Boll daughter has this, and my daughter's dog Boudica has developed it with age.

Incidentally, my daughter's dog is pregnant from a male who also has those pretty banded hairs in front, and both carry the coat gene. I have wanted a coated male from her for a long time, maybe Santa will bring me one. Not sure if my husband would approve...what's one more? Wink Smile

Jenn, I have been eyeing the cross for years and have only seen one working line male who meets my criteria, but the female I would have bred him to was not even born when he was with us and still breeding. I'll find one again, some day.

Same as me, fawndallas!

My only reservation on hanging on to one is I have female here who absolutely must, come hell or high water, get her IPO1 next year.

OMG these are some gorgeous dogs!  I can only hope Betoven, my long coat black and red Remo son, matures into half as good looking a dog as these!

Kelly, working line males I'm really impressed with are dwindling rapidly, hence my choice. I had no real option but to go outside the lines to find what I wanted. Ten years ago, there were a good number I would've used...now, not so much. I'll be curious to see what you end up pairing up when the time comes ;-)

Ruger- No the original dog in your post is definitely a BLACK AND RED long coat, they can have the black overlay over the coat which can make it look like some sabling coming through. the above males posted by GSD Lineage are stunning!

I think so Cmills,
Ruger1
Some of the plush coat BlackRed also have that black frost thing, but it is not Sable, but still looks nice, Like the dog went through a toaster. I think it is more pronounced on the long coats

Going through the database and checking for errors/Duplicates/missing data,  I have also had the chance to see a lot of interesting coat properties Teeth Smile
