GSDPack - I agree that there are some breeders that breed a dog b/c of how he/she works and not just because they scored well in a trial. I think many people make it seem as if a very good sport dog is used in a breeding then it is only b/c of the name and that isn't the case with every dog or breeder.
I agree that you don't know anything until after at least 2 generations and even then the breedings as you mentioned have to be well matched and not just thrown together. There are a number of good dogs here in the states. I notice you have to do some digging but there are quite a number but as you said, names sell.
Very good point on using lower drive/energy solid dogs in breeding. I think that doesn't get mentioned at all. You need that to bring balance in a litter and breeding program. Every can't and shouldn't be high drive/energy. The really good one's find that golden middle and look 3-4 generations down the line when planning.

What GSDPACK is telling is very true in my country - Slovakia. Most of the breeders breed their females to studs that produce well, name or titles are not that important. What is important is that the stud must be a strong dog - nerves, drives. And he must produce well.If the male is great but does not prove to produce dogs with strong nerves, high drives and healthy hips and elbows, breeders will stop using him very soon.It is not important whether the dog has competed at WUSV, there are a lot of dogs here that placed well at WUSV or FCI but they are not used for mating or just a little while on the other hand there are dogs that have only SVV 1 or IPO 1 title and they have a lot of matings. For example these dogs - Ipor Kiddo http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=443798 , Hero Stalica http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=523091 ,Fant spod Lazov http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=703158 .
Out of those that competed at WUSV or FCI or our Nationals these are/were used a lot - Hoky Va-Pe http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=474328 , Faro Demin Dvor http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=600966 ,Drago Eqidius http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=523806 .
Then there are also dogs that were at nationals but never made big points yet they produced well such as Dunco Va-Pe http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=410753 ,Saturn Eqidius http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=438933 .
