I ask about his pedigree because I also have a dog from Mittelwest, just wanted to check out his pedigree and see if there are any related dogs so I could watch for AF (in the event it would be hereditary) in mine.

I'm glad I could help, NV Also has a Bison raw diet. Primal complete raw diet has all sorts of funky exotic protiens, so does Bravo :)

Let us know what the other vet says for sure!

Definite NO on Royal Canin;  and if Prince has allergies like you say I would be very careful with Natures Variety; it has flax and 2 of my 4 dogs CANNOT take flax, or any type, oil, seed, etc. etc.  That is why I chose Bravo over Natures Variety, a much cleaner formula without any flax or ground?? whatever's.  JMHO  Nan

I had both vets return my call today and both sound great!!.. Both are from the same well respected animal hospital that has experience with AF,,One of the vets is a surgeon and the other a holistic vet..??

decisions. decisions..I am thinking about going with the holistic vet first..And seeing the surgeon as a last resort?...Opinions??,,,:)

That sounds like a wonderful plan...that way, even if you do see the surgeon you'll have something else to consider while assessing his opinion!

I think the ingredients sound good; however, there are a lot of different proteins as you stated and possibly one protein source would be better for him.  But his problem did not start with this food.  You said he has had this problem for some time.  What was he eating when the problem started?

I would go back and investigate that food, what was the meat source and when did the foul smelly problem start and what was he eating?  Go from there, but I will say this; when my girl had the problem I did have to find a food that worked for her and I ended up with a single source protein of fish from Solid Gold along with homecooked chicken/vegi's; only a very small amount of kibble per day.  Sometimes it is the type of fiber, or not enough fiber and of course if there is any allergies which becomes a problem.  Best of luck with your new vet's; let us know what they have to say.  Nan

I think holistic is the way to go then you have gone through all the treatments before surgery.  Keira was treated homoeopathicly for many years. She couldn't have any of the other medications or surgery.  Only one concern about raw is that stools can become to hard then you might need to add an oil.  Kee was fine on the raw until she was around 10 then we had swapped her to Nature Diet a wet food with No nasties.  She had the AF from around 7 1/2 years old.

I have done a little research on the last foods Prince has been on ..Here are the ingredients below..FWI while on TOTW it was at it's worst (the dirty butt) and and while on Royal Canin it was at its best. I only changed from Royal Canin because I did not care for the ingredients. However, with all foods listed below he has had a problem except Royal Canin. When I feed salmon from the can I think it might get even worse now that I am reflecting back on it...The common denomanator  looks like salmon/fish????...

Actually I know two of the dogs in your dogs pedigree had PF. Which the breeder is very aware of. Maxi vom Mittlewest and Jaguar von der Mausespitz

Alaina38, I am not sure how to respond. That makes me very sad to hear if it is true. Not that you would be intentionally dishonest, but can you tell me how you now this?,,You can PM if you feel that is more appropriate.

Thanks
