Probably no connection.... but Many of the GSD's who were in films durring this era went back to Dorothy Crider's White Shadow lines.  The Rin Tin Tin lines were also lighter colored dogs frequently producing light masks... Interesting that "The Littlest Hobo" was named LONDON... as one of the well known WGSD kennels who has had both of those lines in their breeding program at various times is located in London Ontario...  prolly coincidence ...  (BTW this person is a friend of mine, and has regularily produced dogs for Police, SAR, Obedience, and Guide dogs... for well over 30 years. They by NO MEANS breed only for color)

WW, I know one thing for sure: London did NOT come from London, Ontario. Chuck was living in California when he got the dog! My books are still in boxes, but I vaugyely recall the name having to do with London, England. I think Chuck was there during the blitz.

An intereting tidbit of info: both the White Shadow dogs and the Hobo lines were in Secret Samson-Woo, the giant Malemute-GSD cross used to create the current Shiloh shepherd.dog.

Above is a littermate to my Baden. All 3 of my dogs from the same sire have weird markings on their faces.

Jim, she was the little girl I sent back to the breeder. She was too much for me. Baden's little sister, Dasti.

Here you have reversed mask. It used to be more common "back then".  Also back then dogs could make a phone calls.
