Sorry to divert back to the original picture, the hindquarters & back legs--rear assembly---looks wrong for a GSD, too long & straight, IMHO! I agree that he's a handsome fellow all the same!

That may be the position in that picture. Some of the other pictures look a bit more "Shepherd-esque." Striking dog, no matter the breed.

I would also like to. Add that there are merle OGSD from the original sheepherding stock before the unification of types and standardization.
Hundmutter you are pretty tough but I can assure you that this is no hoax.

The new pic only makes me feel more strongly that he isnt pure breed, but boy what a handsome dog. Looks to tall also... IDK.

Merle and brindle are both dominant over the agouti locus. So if a dog has brindle or merle, the dog will have one parent with that color. (Although dominant black can hide the brindle gene.) So, it is possible to breed those colors out of the breed--just like sable has been all but bred out of the European conformation lines.

Bee, yes that's the right book ! Even if you can't read
the text, can't you find the picture Harrisonsgsd26 recalls ?

Margaret: sable may have been "all but" bred out of German-based
showlines in America, that doesn't mean it has been bred out yet,
on the rest of the planet ! Wink Smile

On the subject of shape, can't say this merle dog looks so different to my Damian, even to the rough hair over the croup and he is definitely not a cross.

I have gone through all 776 pages and can not find that same picture. And I can say for certain, this picture:

is NOT in my book!

I have found these pictures, but again I have no way of knowing what context they are being shown! No harm though in sharing, and maybe someone else can put the puzzle together for us all?
