Maybe it's just me and my Rhino skin but I didn't see anyone handing the OP his ASS. It is what it is and I would love one or many to tell me what I don't know and maybe save me some bumps and bruises in my journey due to their experiences!
gsdlvr4life- All I can say is WHOA, start saving that money!
And Trouble...... So sorry for the losses.

Quote: Would you want a dog with hare feet, a soft back, weak pasterns, loose hocks, and a poorly positioned stifle to be a working dog that you need to perform a duty for 10 years? If so, you're more of a jackass than I imagined.
GSD's can work for ten years ? Name 50 that did. LOL Most don't start service till two, and then you might get 6 or 7 years. Cheap ass depts run their dogs into the ground, but was the dog really working ?
I have seen dogs over the years that had some of the silly shit you are talking about and they worked just fine, and did so for 7 or 8 years. No one was talking about the dog having every single malady that you could think of. Talk about panties in a wad.
One of the ugliest dogs that I ever saw had most of what you are talking about. He was a working fool, and did so for 10 years. Explain that one. LOL Since physical attributes are the easiest to fix, and the dog had every plus you could imagine when it came to working, would you have left those genetics out of your breeding program because he looked like a cartoon ?
Quote: I wanted to breed to improve, that was my desire
Here is your first lesson, stop thinking you are going to improve, and try and think about getting some semblance of balance. You are looking to produce pups that all fit the bill, not 2 out of 8 that work, and 6 that are pet quality. If you can get 8 out of 8 that are as good as their parents then you are doing well. Most of us are still working on that, no matter what you read. : )

I for one do not believe a word when People say they are not breeding to make a profit from the Pups a load of rubbish, If like you Guys say you lose money on breeding then WHY breed in the first Place. Many Dogs INCLUDING those owned by the posters are not worthy of being bred from in the first place i can bet that is true in a lot of cases,
Now the OP has said he or she wants to get a Dog better than the one owned now to mate to it, You do not breed from ANY dog unless it is of Superior ancestry to start with and i do not mean just on one side of the Breeding of the Dogs, You have to have TWO better dogs
Now this is not going to be over well received by some i can see it now arms in the air saying what the F is he talking about
Of course many will defend there actions for breeding, But if you are going to say you are breeding to better the breed then Crap as i said so many dogs are not breed worthy of bettering the breed leastways not the amount now bred and you see the amount of this breed in animal shelters that says it all
TO the OP
Before you ever consider breeding you should study Genetics first and fore most then look for the very best quality bred dogs you can find then do your homework on them

And i agree with Jeff From any Breeding no matter what the parents are or how they work or how well they are bred you only get a small percent of those which are on par with the parents, and great if you get one Better that is the Aim to breed better than the parents. If Breeding to better any breed of species was so easy the world would be full of Outstanding Dogs etc and everything else But sadly that is not the case. I will relay what a Master Dog trainer and Helper told me last night when he worked my young Gina for the first time and this was at another club other than my usual club, This Guy is 3 times National Champion. He said She is a very rare find meaning Gina, He said her likes do not come along very often she is one of the few who really have that something special which even really good dogs do not have I would love to own her. I said i know and thanks for saying it, I did not say that so many had said the same before him, However to me proof is in the pudding she still has to prove it and i can honestly say she may be better with a Guy such as him and others handling her but she is my Dog and it will stay that way.
I say this just to tell the OP that it is not so cut and dried this breeding of any species, It is a thinking game i look generations ahead myself not only with Dogs i do not breed them But i study them in every single detail to get the Pups i want and i know what i want and i know what to look for
