I think all GSD's are good looking, HD, regardless of their pedigree.  Sorry I can't say that for Malis, they just don't appeal to me in  any way, don't look purebred, and they are sort of squirrely and single minded.  I prefer a thinking dog, but that's just me. I'm probably wrong. Asking me to own a Mali is like asking you to own an ASL. I'm sure you'd have plenty to say about that.

I am really shocked to learn that you , Hired Dog the quintessential working dog dude,  actually owns a  GSD. What's this world coming to? You're not putting me on, are you?

Indeed blitzen, malinois are not the best looking dogs, but, when you see one work...that single minded obsession to finish the job or die trying, its truly the most beautiful of all things to experience.
There are many dogs i would not own, malinois included and thinking in a dog i need to respond NOW is not at the top of my agenda.

No, i would kid you, i own a young 15 month old male that is more malinois in his performance then a GSD. Yes, he is a GSD, pure even and he introduced me to the "clique" here of not owning the proper pedigree.

One complaint I've heard about the malinois (from those owning both) is that even though the dog is spectacular on the trial/field, people don't realize the danger, and can make trouble not taking the dog seriously or even noticing it. On the other hand, you have a huge GSD that has never done serious work or is a slow, friendly and relaxed, but the look commands respect, and people tend to just behave to begin with, avoiding trouble in the first place.

I liked this thread, so many of you made excellent posts. I think about how the angles affect agility and jumpimg and if the longest stride should be the only thing to look for.

DD please allow me to apologise for blitzen's trollish remark. you gotta understand us gsd folk have trouble accepting our breed has been displaced by the mal as the goto dog for work.

Hired Dog, you wrote-

"Yes, he is a GSD, pure even and he introduced me to the "clique" here of not owning the proper pedigree"

Does he gait nicely?  May we see a pic of this young one?  You sure have MY attention!

Clever

Bravo, i have no idea what he gaits like, but, i can tell you he will hunt for ever to find his odors he is being trained to detect, he will hunt for ever during an article search and he has a genetically full hard bite. I have never posted any pics in here, maybe next week.

VK4, i understand, but its been this way for a long time now, it maybe time to accept facts.

Admin, its those people who are the most fun to deal with...for many reasons...especially from the dog's point of view...

Oh, before i forget, a few people have asked me about my dog before in here, out of those, when i supplied the info asked for, i never heard anything back, except.....for two people who i think are great and could care less what others think, Keith and jenni.
He is always polite and asks how my dog is doing, she is a "witch" with a pedigree, amazing what she can tell about my dog and everything she said was correct, thank you jenni again.

If i wasn't maxed out with dogs i would love to have the most smallest fastest nutso prey monster mal i could find. be a hoot training i would train for scent work and comp Obed.

i think i am ready, made all my mistakes on the slow dogs so. i think i could learn to deal with a mal.

certainly on my bucket list it will be the cuimination of all my experience going into one dog.

one day mebbe...

HD, you're a good sport for putting up with my trollishism - is there such a word. I always got the impression that you thought the GSD was not exactly a stellar breed, never thought you'd ever own one, felt you were here on the GSD board to point out how much better the Mali was than any of our GSD's could ever hope to be. My mistakes.

No need to apologize for me, vk, and if I understood what the hell you said I might have a snappy retort.

Oops, gotta run. My ASL is cowering in the corner, it's storming so I have to get her Thunder Shirt on her before she pees on the floor again. I wish it came in pink, she really looks pretty wearing it.
