what does it tell about the dog?

There are a few common characteristics that may be associated with a particular type dog that interested me. One of them being the dog’s ear posture during an attack. Never erecting them is not seen often in the GSD. In police work, the particular dog I refer to takes on the suspect in the same manner with the ears held down. When these dogs are restrained at the end of the track/search function, or called back after the bite they often keep their ears tightly tucked down as well while barking. This is also odd. There are others, like the outward signs of their happiness while physically apprehending a suspect. It looks just like the dogs you see biting the sleeves or the suits in training or trials, but this is carried through to real life encounters. This is an extremely rare event to witness in any dog, not just the police dog. Biting a person is a stressful event, but it doesn't seem that way to this type dog.

If you watch the video you see how he runs through the helper without changing ear posture. The significance of this would possibly relate to the dog’s perception of the threat, specifically his inability to identify with it. This does not mean the dog is of that particular type and it may have it’s roots elsewhere. Its just a common trait that I have seen in them. Again, this is just something I take note of because I am interested in dogs of absolute confidence and a desire to dominate.

I should note I don’t use equipment when testing a dog who will be tasked with physically apprehending. Most of these characteristics are observed at a later time, not as selection criteria.

There is a school of thought that suggests that flattened ears means also submission.

Thanks, Irina! Do you have video of Bordy Blendy in B? I have a young Bordy son and pretty much all of the videos are C!

Excellent point about a dog dropping their ears as being a sign of submission. If one thinks the dogs I’m referring to, or even that dog in the video are dropping ears out of submission, then who am I to convince otherwise.
