I've imported a dozen or so, and only 2xs did I need to use a broker. All other times I dealt directly with the breeder/seller. No middleman.

I have to say I had a terrible time with my breeder who is in the USA. So these issues happen in this own country as well as buying from an overseas buyer. The bad part is, you go to a breeder with a good reputation expecting a good experience. Unfortunately, this doesn't always happen. In my case, I checked everything out, but I still ended up with problems. I learned some huge lessons that is for sure!! :-) At least I ended up with a wonderful dog! I know some people aren't that lucky. It sucks that honesty isn't more widely spread.

Was that a Mali or a GSD, PMWatch?

by Blitzen on 01 November 2013 - 19:11

IMO  the big problem with importing dogs - it does not support domestic breeders or their breeding programs.

Although I agree with supporting breeders here in the US, I do NOT support breeders asking outrageous prices on their puppies. But as was stated, it's my choice to buy or not. I've seen prices skyrocket over the past 2-3 years and I keep asking myself why. Other than many think because it cost more, they need to have it....So the price goes up. One sees what the other is getting so they too raise the price. Before you know it, that 1,000 pup is now 2,000. The breeding hasnt changed just the cost.

As Ive gotten older, I steer clear of "guarantees" Most don't honor what they say they will and for whatever reason think that they should get more money for it. You stand behind what you breed because of who you are not because of what you write. It's called honor and seriously lacking these days.,If you have a puppy/dog that is sick, has a genetic problem, or is just plain nuts, do you really want a replacement?

Would I buy sight unseen in a country I know nothing about? NO but I would network through others to find someone if I liked what I saw. That to me is what the internet and sites like this are for.

As far as cost of a dog, this is Economics 101.  Supply and demand.  Prices will come down if there is no demand.  Someone is buying these puppies or dogs.
