Too right, Hexe, I agree with you.

by Gustav on 28 October 2012 - 21:10

Couple points.....
I have never heard of anyone saying that all PD dogs are breedworthy....never.
I have seen many Sch dogs that lack fight and defense drive.
I have seen many many excellent real working dog that dont have excellent conformation
I have seen many many excellent conformation dogs that cant do real work
I have never seen a top patrol or scent dog that was limited by incorrect structure, though many of the top patrol and scent dogs have G structure at best....this is one of the biggest wives tales out there that a working dog stopped working, because their croup was too steep or their gait was not flowing enough....
My point is there are no absolutes in the breed anymore, but in America we tend to not take top females to anything but sport dogs or show dogs and in the long run that will and has been detrimental. JMO
These are only my observations from what I have seen, maybe I havent seen enough, and there is enough out there to make these observation the exceptionThinking..I dunno!

Nice post Gustav. I really liked my 65 65 kkl2 that would rival the malinois in agility.

I worked three police canines over the years.  The first was in place when i took over the program for a moderate size municipal police department.  He was a shepherd husky mix and while a really sweet dog, he wasn't canine quality.   He was what was at the pound when they started a program with no money, no real experience, and limited resources.   I washed him out although he had purportedly been through training at a neighboring agency and worked the road as a"dual" trained dog.   The second dog was obtained form a different neighboring agency and had been housed in anticipation of them needing a spare.   He was full GSD and from what I recall of his pedigree was what i would call a mix of german show and American lines.  he turned out being a really good dual trained patrol-narcotics dog.   While his pedigree would not of appealed to most of the folks into throwing money at european "working" lines he would of been a fantastic dog to breed to.  He had nice everything including confromation, and attitude and the arrests to back it up!  Unfortunately, he was killed in the line of duty helping to rescue a little boy who had been taking hostage.   The third dog was also a GSD and was a donation from the public.  He was an American lines GSD and looked gorgous and not to different from the second dog.  He was also trained as dual dog for narcotics and patrol.  He was a very nice looking working dog but I would of not bred him to anything less than a really hard female.  He too had arrests to back up his lack of credentials on a field.  So a lot depends on the eyes of the beholder!  JMO!

Hoof and paw,
Years ago you could find a German Sl dog that would work really well and could perform very reliably as a Patrol dog.  Unfortunately those days have passed and finding a suitable German SL GSD for Patrol work in the States are very slim.  You would have a better chance at hitting the lottery than finding an American SL dog that could do patrol work well.

i have done alot of SAR and have a dog who is amazing at it. those of you who havent done it probably think it is frufru work ect. tracking for a long period takes alot out of a dog. it takes years of training and fitness training to get a dog to beable to track for 2 days to find someone in the woods. not literal 48 hrs but in shifts ect. it is hard. just like police work it can get tough after a wile i feel personaly TITLES are crap when it comes to breeding i have seen many a dog have a Schh 1,2 or 3 that dosent know what a sleeve is. i like to see the dogs work  if i can visualy see them work see videos of their parents ect that works for me aslong as they have all their health tests done. most SAR requires hips and eyes certified you dont want to put 3 years into getting a dog mission ready to have them come up lame and cant do the work any more due to a genetic problem. not every dog PERIOD is breedworthy titles k9 sar mwd ect any breed each dog is different and each needs to be for the betterment of the breed.
