Fawn, if you let "nature do it's thing", you are likely to have an issue that otherwise would not exist. The sooner that tooth is extracted, the better. There is very rapid growth at this time during tooth growth that one or two weeks is not going to be good for your pup. If the juvenile canine is outside the permanent tooth, it is pushing the tooth inward. There is no reason a "regular" vet can't do the extraction...it's not a big deal to pull a baby tooth. And it should NOT cost eight hundred or a thousand dollars. It's not rocket science. Bite the bullet and get it done.

I was patiently waiting for Ziggy's canines to come in...now I'm wondering if I should have him checked. All of his front teeth have come in very nicely but I don't even see bumps for his canines and his baby canines seem firmly rooted. He is also 21wks old. I did notice that when his adult incisors came in, they came in behind his baby teeth, pushing them forward instead of out so he had a double row there for a short time but they were very loose and he lost them without it messing up his bite. Luckily our vet does root canals so if there is a problem, he will be able to deal with it and we won't have to find a specialist. We're due to pick up more heartworm/flea meds at the end of the month. I'll take Ziggy along for a dental check up if his canines are not doing what they should. I'm hoping by then his adult teeth will be in and the baby teeth gone. Deb

My younger dog had a retained upper canine.  I waited a week and it didn't come out.  By then he had an appointment for hip and elbow prelims, so the vet pulled it out for free.  That day it had started to turn more of a grayish color, so I suspect it would have died and come out on its own soon after.

All done.  With the suggestion to add peanut butter to the chew ropes, the tooth is out.

Well now it's our turn. Ziggy's canines are pushing thru. He has one baby tooth that is loose and listing so I'm not worried about it. The other lower baby canine is firm and may present a problem. He is getting tired of me trying to wiggle it. The uppers are just visible but not broken thru yet and are coming in right behind the baby teeth so I think we are good there but that one lower canine has my undivided attention. I keep handing the rope to him and Echo and she is trying to pull them out for him LOL.

One down, three to go.  The one I knew was loose came out in my hand tonight.
