And how long have you been studying GSD anatomy at dog parks, BM1?

by Abby Normal on 10 September 2012 - 20:09
I am confused because Vicky is not the OP, and the OP is referring to an 8 week old pup. We have a piggy back/crossover thread going on (I think). Vicky, please start a separate thread about your pup.

To the OP: I wouldn't be so quick to write off weak rear in a GSD to being filled with worms. Working at the vet, I've seen a bunch of pups that were filled with worms who were weak and whose blood sugar dropped to really low levels like you're explaining. But weak rears in larger breeds can be a serious concern and need to be watched. At the vet, we deworm the pup with every shot visit, whether the fecal is positive or negative. Unless the pup is old enough to be on and kept on a heartworm preventative that deworms monthly, we typically deworm for good measure. But I would watch the weak rear. If it's wobbly, it could be more than just being a young, malnourished pup.
BM1: not all GSDs have "gross back legs". There are some in the breed that I agree should not have their genes carried on, but there are a lot more in the breed that don't have "gross back legs." And backyard breedrs are more than just someone with a sign in their yard or an add in the paper, there are a LOT of them on here, and a LOT who have websites. Doesn't mean that they take really good care of their dogs, have really good lines, health test, or are reputable breeders at all. And the dog park is a horrible place to find good examples of any breed! Seeing a few GSDs who have weak rears at a dog park does not mean that ALL GSDs have weak rears!

Vicky, I hope you are not keeping your puppy chained up for any amount of time, that will lead to behaviour problems. You will probably get a bad rear and damage to every other joint if you are keeping it directly on concrete for a good amount of time. I am not trying to be rude, I hope your puppy is not kept as he is pictured.

Thank you for all your help! BM1 you to me ar an idiot! "That is what I get for getting a GSD" are you kidding me. I came on here looking for advise, not to be chastised by someone who doesnt know me, my dog, or anything about me! So please do me a favor and go bother someone else. These very nice people are trying to give me some sound advice, if I wanted to speak to another moron, I would call the breeder back! For the rest of you, thak you for your advise. Even though it has only been a couple days, I have been feding him smaller more frequent meals of Blue Buffalo (rating are terrific for large breed puppies) I never heard of it before until I researched it and found it is one of the best. I have been giving him Syrup if he is due for a long walk, I only allow him to play with my son for short periods and then he rests. I take him back to the vet next week. I called today, he will be put on another worm medication for 2 more weeks. Abby, yes I personally saw many worms, I had him to the vet that put him on 2 differnent worm meds, I took a fecal sample with me, which was tested. He was tested for low blood sugar and had a CBC done at his previous visit. He will have all redone again next week. Thank you for all your help. Please keep posting if you have any other advise.
Vicky, my heart breaks for your dog! My puppy is not even close to as bad as yours. Mine is just a step above clumsy. I wish you all the luck in the world with him. Please keep us posted.
