Ibrahim has the correct description. It's acutally a fault for the GSD, as the pigment on the muzzle is faded to practially nothing.

Here's what my reversed mask GSD looked like at 13 years of age:

Swingfield, if you'd PAID MORE ATTENTION, you would have realized The Littles Hobo was a TV series featuring a dog named Hobo. Hobo was played by several different dogs (the ones pictured in the B&W photo I posted). They were unbelieveably smart, and their 'educator', Chuck Eisenman wrote several books about his training 'methods'. I use the term 'methods' loosely, as the books never go into details as to how he trained. They just give general principles.

It seems it was more the particular line the dogs came from.  A good friend of his used to post on the Shiloh Shepherd message board, and he said Chuck started to have problems with shy temperament when he inbred too much on his dogs. The problem was, when he outbred, he got just a regular GSD, without the incredible intelligence that characterized London (the very first "Hobo") and his offspring.

I saw them perform live during the 1970s, and it was unbelievable what those dogs could do!

Problem is NO ONE I know of has been able to duplicate Chuck's success, which is why I've come to the conclusion the dog's natural intelligence played a big part in what he accomplished. Also, Chuck was a bachelor, and lived with the dogs pretty much 24/7, so he had much more time to work on training than most of us, especially once the dogs became his full-time job.

As an example of their intelligence, shortly after Chuck returned from the war, he was staying up late at night, reading and brooding, and London wanted to go to sleep. He came and nudged Chuck a couple of times. Chuck got up to let him outside, but he refused to go.

Finally, London stood up on his hind legs, and turned the light off. (I'd have to reread the book to know for sure if he used his teeth or his paw to do this.) Chuck got the message!

About Gero, really dont know as I am uneducated as to the actual genetics of reverse mask.  Anyone here know the genotype?  If you took away his black recessive leaving his face without black on his muzzle would he be reverse mask then?  If yes, why is he not now if the only reason he has black on his face is that he carries black recessive?

Just wondering.  An established genotype indicator for that facial marking would help.
