My older dog adores cats.  My year old pup likes them too, but he sometimes chases when they run, especially when he has not received adequate exercise.  When well run, he pretty much ignores the cats.

I've been fortunate to have never had a GSD who was not good with cats, even though most of my GSDs came to me between 5 and 12 months old and had no previous cat interactions.

I adore cats, my first pet was a cat who I had for 15 years of my childhood, so they are very special to me.  If I had a dog who was not good with cats I would rehome the dog, no matter what.  I never allowed my dogs to challenge, harrass or chase my cats in any way, if they did they were corrected.  The cats were allowed to eat first, if the cats wanted the dogs' food, toys or bed they could have them.  I've never had a dog who didn't learn to fully respect cats.  I'm currently in a kitty hiatus, but I look forward to having cats with my dogs again.

My current oldest GSD adores kittens more than anything else in the world, he is a wonderful kitten babysitter, cleans them, plays super-gentle with them, gaurds them from all other animals.
In the past when I've had litters of pups my cats were wonderful at socializing the puppies, one kitty in particular was super motherly and she cleaned and psuedo-nursed any puppy 3 weeks or younger.  (I say psuedo-nursed because she didn't actually have milk to feed the pups with, but she adored letting them nurse on her anyways)
