 vomeisenhouse:
I would like to ask prager if the litters they are producing now are better than what they produced years ago ? And if answere is yeas in what way have they "BETTERED THE BREED" over their extensive breeding program of many many years?
 The answer is Yes .
I get this question often.
Q: Back then ifyou could have choice of  which of the current  dogs would you like to have back then in your ( alpinek9 or jinopo)  breeding program which would they be?
I have talked with Jiri about it ( JINOPO) and he immediately said all our breeding stock is better then it was back then. And I agree.
Why?
We are always trying to breed dogs as they were originally intended. There is no difference . Working dogs of versatile type . Back then we had some excellent dogs,  but they did not have consistent genotype. z Pohranicni straze line was basically started with 5 excellent stud dogs bred to Czech females. All those dogs then had hidden problems. Thus  the progeny was (and still is screened) The screening process was thorough and involved thousands of dogs which were evaluated from temperament , hips to miniscule details like a diameter of the wrist. These dogs then were allowed in to breeding program and then their progeny tested and if the progeny did not show quality then the stud was eliminated. That is since each of the  studs were bred to number of bitches in order to determine what he can produce. I am not going to get into the details of this breeding program which is a topic of our 3 days seminar on breeding thus it is quite involved.

All I want to say that this had been and is still done by us and the result was eliminating of problems and establishing of consistency of quality. No, we are not breeding perfect dogs, but even so back then we had excellent dogs in phenotype they were not so good in genotype.

Thus I would say that betterment of the breed is improving the quality of the genotype=consistency  of the quality of the dogs in our breeding program .

vomeisenhose:
I believe here in the states there is way too much emphasis on the stud and not on the female. IMO here in the states we are flooded with SchH1 a-normal females the europeans love to "SEND TO AMERICA" as they would never be used in their breeding programs and they are bred EXTENSIVELY here for the $$.
Genetically the influence of 1 female and 1 male is the exactly the same.
As far as the breed goes the stud is more important because he can influence production of much more pups then female does.

As far as what is send here in USA I would like to say that all sots of stuff is send here.
Even so some send here rejects we send in the breeding programs here our females which  produced for us what we want and we are willing to sell them to for ever home to small breeders who will breed them and incorporates them into every day family life. There are waiting lines on our females.
Next we sell dogs which we believe are suitable for breeding but we do not need this "blood".  Often we may request a pup for our breeding program from these females.
Then there are dogs which we believe are  potential breeders ( pups or youngsters) not proven breeders .
Yes some  may sell rejects from they breeding programs into other's people breeding programs. Yes we do sell such dogs  too but we absolutely will not recommend such dogs for breeding and then may be excellent dogs for police , S&R and families.

Thanks for the insight prager. I agree with most of what you have said. But in reality here in the states most breedings are done for the $$. The good ethical breeders here who take it seriously and have REAL TOP FEMALES for their breeding programs are far and few between. We breed some of the finest cattle, horses etc... in the world with the exception of "WORKING DOGS" and it is because of the relatively low price to purchse and the lack of true knowledg and insight of a valuable breed worthy dog is.The thinking of most breedingd done here is "I PAID $1000 or more for my puppy and if her hips are good I'm going to breed her and sell my puppies for that much money. She is a great dog and will chase a ball all day and is excellent with kids....lol I use the yoschy daughters I was involved with as a measuring stick for what a real working female is and I tell you females like them are far and few between here. If I had a $100 bill for every SchH1 female that I've seen imported for breeding purposes that I wouldn't give a second look at I could probably take next year off from work. This will be a good thread for all the newbie breeders. I'm no breeder but I have seen lots of litters put on the ground and the ones with true top top quality females bred with excellent males had a much higher percentage of pups that were qualified to be sent working homes. I've seen whole litters that were excellent. You could eeni meeni miny mo to pick your puppy. The litters I've seen with questionable. females usually had 3-4 pups in a litter of 9 that tested worthy of going to working homes. This has just been my experience. I always look at a pedigree but a pedigree is just what it is .... a piece of paper. Pedigree means nothing if dog is no good. JMO. Kurt
