What a relief Carole, hope this will be the end of the problem for poor Chiki.
Thanks Doppleganger, looking more hopeful now but vet did say she didnt think it was AF. at the moment but dont rule it out. We,ll just have to wait n hope she,s healed or nearly healed by the time of check up.Thanks to all who offered advice.Carole.S.
Relieving news, Carole...the fact that her anal sacs were impacted strongly suggests that this was the root of Chiki's issue, and not AF. As I mentioned, it does happen where an impacted sac ruptures and drains, but instead of this happening internally, the rupture occurs through the skin of the perineum, creating a draining tract that resembles those observed with AF, but without the progression that is seen with AF. I'm betting that this vet's diagnosis was a lovely bit of Holiday cheer for you and Chiki. :)
Noddi, I had a friend that did treatment for 2 years, used to wipe his dog ass with a wipe it......I recommended diet changed, to ORIJEN 6 FISH and voila, he called me crying 2 weeks later. Good luck
Hiya everyone.Hope yu your families n fur babies are keeping well. Here,a an update on Chiki.Well we,ve been for a check up earlier today n the condition hasnt really improved that much.RH gland is now clear but not a lot of improvement n the 3 small pin holes are still there,LH gland was still impacted n had to be expressed again.Vet said there was pus n blood there. She wants to have her in n anaethatised to lance the small lump she can feel in LHG.n then sluice her out so she can see wots going on but i cant afford it yet.So we,ve decided to give the atopica a go....she will be on 150mg twice daily for 1 week.I still dont think the vet is 100%as to whether its AF or just anal gland infection/issues.Have ordered the tabs n sent off the script,so just have to wait for the meds.to arrive.Chiki is fine in herself, well she was up to having the internal again. My poor baby but i,m sure she,ll be herself tomoz.Carole S.
Morning everyone, thought i give an update on Chiki,s AF/PF.Chiki has been on atopica,150mg twice a day for 23 days.Yesterday we visited the vets for a check up n am glad to advise that the inflammation is all gone n no infection either on outside /insides.He expressed her glands again as they were full n she,s now had her meds.decreased to 150mg once daily for 10 days n then every other day with a check up in one months time.If the condition is still improving then it,ll be decreased to twice weekly.Thank yu all for your advice n experiences with this condition as it is greatly appreciated.Carole Spelman Rheinmeister gsds(UK)
Very good news, Glad to hear that the meds are working and that surgery is not required, anal fistulas are so awful to deal with.
Thanks for the update.
I'm glad she's improving, and don't want to be a "debbie downer" here, but if her glands are full 'again' after a month or so, I would seriously consider having the glands removed at a later point. Continually having full glands that need to be expressed is not a good thing and can also lead to those fistula's. So while they me be at bay right now, when you stop the meds, they may resurface . To keep 'having' to express the glands tells me the glands would be better off removed. Just my 2 cents
Diane
thats ok,Diane, other friends in the gsd show scene here in the UK have also stated this but really wanted to get ontop of this condition with the atopica first. If she continues to improve n we can maintain it on just 2 doses of 150 mg per week,i,ll be able to save up for the op.Carole S.
Glad Chiki's doing good. Hope she continues to improve.
