a dog can carry a bi-color gene and a black gene, each dog inherits one color gene from either parent if parent A carries the bi-color gene and parent B carries the black gene they can have a puppy that has both genes and expresses the bi-color coat because it is dominant to the black gene. Because of the tier dominance in colors if you have a bi-color that carries black and breed it to a sable that carries black you would get a litter that could produce Sable, Bi-color, and Black puppies in one litter. With a 50% chance of Sable 25% chance of Bi-color and 25% chance of Black.

I found out today that my mother had beaten a couple of litters of puppies in black.

hope she has inherited the black gene smiley



how about getting a bi-color???

Bi color is the second most recessive of the GSD colors (Excluding white which is really a masking gene not an actual coat gene) so it is similar to get a bi-color you must have at least one parent that carries the bi color gene. If you breed a dog that carries the bi-color gene with a dog that carries the black gene then only one of the dogs needs the bi-color gene to produce the bi-color because if a puppy gets one bi-color and one black the puppy will come out as a bi-color that carries the black gene. Other than that it would be needed for both parents to carry the bi-color gene as it is less dominant than all other colors than black. Put more simply the puppy would have to be either a bi-color/bi-color to express the bi-color trait (Homozygous) or be a bi-color/black (Heterozygous) where the bi-color is dominant to black for the puppy to come out bi-color. Under any other situation the puppy would come out the other more dominant color but carry the less dominant bi-color coat.

If you want a dog to be a certain color the parents have to at least one of them carry the gene for that color. 2 black dogs for example could never produce anything but black puppies, and a Homozygous Sable could only produce sable puppies regardless who it was bred to because they only give Sable gene and since it is the most dominant would be the gene expressed.

so you're saying that if my girl has inherited her father's gene which give only sable and the male she is mated to have the gene that produces black, she can not get bi-color puppies??

Correct your female cannot have a bi-color with the male she is being bred to, however if she carries the black recessive gene she can have a bi-color puppy if she is bred to another dog that carries bi-color because bi-color is more dominant than black. That is IF she carries the black gene, she might be a Homozygous Sable and in that case 100% of her puppies will always be sable.
