We went to the vet yesterday and good thing.  Echo has a urinary tract infection with a slightly elevated temp of 102.9.  The vet was a little concerned about the prolonged heat but said we will just have to ride it out but to pay attention so that we notice if a pyometra is forming.  We came home with antibiotics that should knock out the infection.  The vet said that Echo is in great health otherwise, very strong, good shape etc.  She weighed in at 70.6 pounds.  Last night I got to sleep 6 hours before she asked to go out.  Big improvement from the other night.

Thanks bea.  Things are definitely looking better.  We are both catching up on our sleep today.

Clear, blood, and then clear again.  It is hard to say when the ovaluation periods starts and ends.  Normally, it is two weeks after start.

Justice,

Thanks for your comments.  We went thru the clear, blood then clear again...then she went blood again and her vulva got even bigger so I was getting worried.  Looks today like it may be heading towards clear again.  Very little blood by this evening.  We're into the 6th week of heat.  She hasn't flagged her tail since the 2nd week.  I think it's just her hormones being crazy on the first heat...at least I hope so.  I'd hate to think we're going to go thru this every 6 months.

i think she is on her way out.
it takes a few cycles for her to get a  normal cycle.
i am very shocked she had such a long first cycle , most first timers are pretty short.
but i guess not all.
things are going to get better.
sounds like her hormones were crazy.

it will be over soon.

Thanks bea,

Things are definitely calming down now.  When it comes to me and my dogs...nothing ever seems to go "normally" but then, I should be used to that by now. LOL  I appreciate your comments, always good info.

I had a foster dog whose first heat was split like that.  She came in,  then stopped, then came back in again.  She was spayed shortly after that so I couldn't say if that would have been normal for her.  But I've heard others talk about split heats before too.   My current dog has always been extremely regular and "normal" for the 5 cycles she's had.  Bet all the clearning and licking herself  started the UTI.

GSDXephyr,

My guess is you are right about the UTI.  She really fusses over that discharge but it seems to be going away now.  I hope...I never considered this a split heat but now that you mention it...I bet you are right.  I'm just hoping that she doesn't start back up for another 6 months.  We finally found a Vet that agrees with me on the age for spaying (at least 2 years).
Thanks for your comments!

Deb
