Whisper,
Great idea, there are some around here that are doing that.
I try to do what I can, but am so busy with the rescue, that I don't have much time to demonstrate. Just the people I run into and adopt a dog to...
We are much in need of better dog trainers around also...
Steph
If we closed the shelters we would have hoards of feral dogs roaming. People would just turn them loose. All you have to look at is third world countries. For example: rabies is rampant in countries like India and China. Since breeding is not regulated here in the U.S., irresponsible people will just produce more and more dogs. As long as they can earn $ 1500 to $ 2000 for so-called designer breeds and other puppies get sold through pet stores, they will continue to produce them. Example: My co-worker bought a chocolate lab from a BYB. After a couple of months, she took in the sister as well because she was a leftover and the so-called breeder would have turned her into the humane society. It is a mess!

If the sable guy from Hawaii, contact Ted Young there. He might know who bred it, or may have bred it himself. Same stock as Gabi, perhaps, as Ted bought Alfred Kuhlen Norden and he was still breeding at age 13 in Hawaii.
Bless you for the work your doing. I wish I had room for a couple of rescues now and then, but I won't for awhile... probably till a couple of my old timers pass.

Yes, Obi is from the Younghaus kennels in Hawaii...the dogs name is Obi Wan Kenobi, I think the same as his mom...
Very nice dog....great with kids and very well behaved...
I didn't know till they shipped him to me. Didn't think they would want him back in Hawaii...long way and lots of money to travel...the guy paid the airlines $900 just to get him to Montana...

Yes, I enabled the enablers. After a while, I began to question my wisdom, and feel dirty from it. Like paying someone else to keep it swept under the carpet, but the filth has never left the house in the first place, only created a bigger pile under the carpet.
Periodically I go to a dog pound for one reason or another and it just totally brakes my heart. I am almost 300lb man and I cry every time I go there. I guess that is the Slav in me. Those are tears of sadness and anger. Where are these people who are dumping their dogs coming from? What is wrong with them? Do they ever look into their dog's eyes? Do they care what their children think and what effect it is going to have on them?
Yes Steph I do understand you. I am just looking for better solution.

http://www.alpinek9.comSteph, bless you. You know they will not keep them , they will just let them lose in the mountains, countryside, desert. For a man to pay $900 to ship him to you, I would guess he loved his dog. I am not condoning the behaviour of giving them up, but life is kicking peoples butt right now. I have a tenant who years ago lived in her van because she could not get a landlord to rent to her with her dog. I try to re educate my owners of rental property to take the animals, 90% finally come along in thier thinking. I have one building they were sneaking them in anyway. Got the owner to give it a try and that building is the most stable, very little vacancy, where are they going to go! We have had very little issues with the dogs. when they use advantage, we do not have the flea problems we had years ago. Only one, who let the dog pee in the unit, in 9 years. The dogs all get along and know each other. The tenants are responsible owners or they MOVE. I am begining to see more and more units that are waking up and taking the animals. I can not take the rotts or the pitts, (I have a rott) and would so much rather take them, then the purse and stroller dogs, but insurance becomes a big issue. I took them in my own personal stuff and they stay until the dog passes and they are better behaved and non barkers, works wonderfully, 10 year tenants, win/win. I have all big dogs in the units, a mix of a lot of different breeds. This is funny, I took a Masstiff in a condo and the owner next door called me when they moved in and asked me if I was crazy, when they moved she cried she loved that dog!
Steph, If they call you about not being able to rent, California has a companion law. all they need is a perscription from Dr. stating they need the animal to feel better, some places want you to get it updated every six months. they can google the law to make sure they get the wording correct.
Daryl,
I was just joshin' ya!!!! ![](/fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/msn/tounge_smile.gif)
Hey Hans,
I totally understand...their eyes get to you and I do know that they don't do well in shelters....
I don't know what the answer is, I just try to do what I can...
Unfortunately I can't say no to a GSD or a Mali.
Other breeds of dogs yes....I may be insensitive, but at least I know my limits....although I have taken in a few labs too...<G> even kept one of those..LOL...
