The way some of these dogs are trained and worked, I'm guessing more than we know succomb to some sort of spinal issue. It  may not be anything that could be attributed to a genetic weakness.

When I started in sch, I had an eleven month old pup I raised, i trained her here at home ....retrieving, tracking, doing articles, protection was off the chain....escape, side transport, had genetic deep hard grips, fight drive, a long bite that was beautiful to see, everybody at clubs who got to see her work said she needs to compete. So one day the helper says we need to train her to out today. Says put a prong on her, ( I never put a prong on her before, she never needed one) like the dumb newb sch person I was, I did like the helper told me to and put a prong on her. She,s on the back tie, he tells me stand twelve feet away from her, he gives her a grip after hold and bark...he takes the lead under the sleeve a tells me to give out command. So instead of giving pressure into the sleeve with her to cause her to out, he snaps the lead and pulls her so hard into the sleeve so her head was torqued back over her neck jamming it ( the back tie pulling from behind, the man pulling her neck directly behind her head from the front)... she couldn't spit the sleeve if she tried...but all you could hear was a muffled scream coming from her....her neck was injured so badly, that my pup had to be retired at the tender age of eleven months old.
