Psst, Nan, that's cleft palate (roof of the mouth is split, so pup has problems suckling)
Had a friend lose a pup due to this a few years back. Vet recommended euthanasia, as pup would have had to be tube-fed, and required expensive surgery before it could swallow properly.

Hope the owner doesn't mind me posting this photo and I don't know the circumstances with this dog, but the ears don't appear to have caused him any problems
