I have an American/German SL female, and I think your dog looks quite nice! He has good bone and solid structure and a nice head. Feet can be a problem with ASL (can be flat or splayed, and have weak pasterns) but he shows none of these faults.

If you would like to PM me his pedigree, I would like to see it!

I can tell right now the name Kismet's Sight for Sore Eyes is likely in there somewhere fairly close up!  (He is my female's grandsire.)

vk4gsd;  I trust i was clear about getting a opinion from a picture, but maybe not for you. I thought maybe there is true interest from this person to learn about their dog. I would never stop my research after one post to this chat room. This chat room is sometimes a good source for information. Did I insult you or your spouse?

What are you 2 talking about?

CoffeeVk4 took Student's comment out of context, so now it looks bad.

But since they are both know-it-alls, it breaks up the monotony of the morning.

OP - glad to see you are a generalist enjoying the many things our breed can do. Now you just need to check out herding which I find to be one of the most fascinating in part because it's always different because the stock is always different. We need more generalists in this breed. It opens the mind to all sorts of ideas including the one that we need to start putting the breed back together again from all the disparate parts we have divided it into.Angry Smile ... I agree with most of what Hundmutter had to say except for two things. First I disagree with Blitzen. A good SV judge while he will not place your dog highly because of the pedigree since that is part of the evaluation process will give you a good fair neutral evaluation of the positives and negatives usually done in a fairly courteous manner. Most American judges will just place you at the end of the class w/o explanation because your dog is not professionally handled and/or part of the current fad. Secondly I have seen male pups at this age go thru a looking gorgeous stage that many never seem to comeback to. Knowing your pedigree lines and what they produce can help evaluate young dogs. Most go thru a stage where they have all the elements of what they will be as an adult. With some lines that may be as young as 8 -10 weeks. Slower maturing lines may not give you that glimpse unil 12-16 weeks. But that moment in time fades quickly and as Hundmutter notes generally 5 months is not a great time to evaluate a pup. I would go further and say 5 mo to 12 or even 14 months is the time when you don't want to be looking at them to closely or critically (I jokingly call it the throw them in the backyard and don't look stage because you probably won't like what you see). As noted many that mature early and show that early blush often do not hold up for the long run. IMHO I believe there is a link between slow maturity and longevity also.

Also a thought for the future. You never want to present your dog either in person or on the web unless he is looking the best he can. People remember the bad far more easily than the good. Thus I would remove the middle photo above. I unfortunately can only see the last two photos and consider the middle one  of no use in attempting an evaluation except to say in the photo it looks like his tail is a bit short.

I agree with the comments above re his head, expression ans sturdiness. I am curious is he a coat with only long ear hair (happens, coat has a range of expressions) or his ear fluff merely puppy coat waiting to grow out?

What is it you are hoping to do with this boy? I too would like a peek at his pedigree. What ever you do have fun and keep exploring all our breed has to offer.
