I know my opinion doesn't mean much. But if I'm going to buy a dog for show. I would try to stay away from something that at 8 months looks like he could have a higher chance of being outside the standard. Of course there are certain breedings that in my mind are worth the chance.

He's not my type (and not just if he's oversize), but I think it's a great idea to do the x-rays before deciding.  What will you do with him?

IMHO

The bigger they are as a pup, the higher the chances are for HD.   If you do go for it, be extra careful, almost obsessive to protect the joints.

Well thanks for all of you that took the time to answer me! My question was about whether this was within standard for his age. All have agreed with my original thoughts, which is he is probably going to be oversized. But thats why I asked for more opinions.  I didn't ask if anyone likes his "type" or whether he'd be something they would like, just if he's above standard for this age. Everyone has their own "type" that they like, and thats their perogative.  And I'd never buy something his age or older without xrays. Thanks to you who answered.

Not an expert and only have my own dog to offer as my experience, but my dog was about 8 months old and 80 lbs.  I looked at his front legs and saw there were no more knobby knees for him to add on the inches.  He is at the standard (65cm?).  He filled out in his chest area and his head got more masculine looking with maturity, but he did not get taller or heavier.  He is WGSL.

I think alot of people may have read the thread to learn just as I did. I can not make any comments or give my opinion because all of our dogs are WL and I never had any experience with WGSL dogs.   Don't take it offensively if not many commented. Take it as though you posted a great topic for many to learn from by reading what was posted.  Wink Smile

I do not necessarily think he will be oversize, alot of dogs have done most of their growing in height at 8 months, maybe 2 to 3 more cm nd they are done.  Of course. there are always exceptions, we used to say 60-61 cm at 6 months, then they will be big but within the size limit probably.

I guess I had hoped more people would comment on how much, if any, their dogs grew after they hit 8 months old, regardless of lines/pedigree, so I could get a general idea on whether this pup would get too big. Thanks to you who did reply. Happy.4th of July all!!!

What is "standard size for age" of the GSD?    I would like to know where, and IF, this is specified.     Different genetics will mean different growth rates, and unless someone is very familiar with the genetics of your dog then they would not be able to make a comment that could be meaningful.      Perhaps this is why there are not more replies.    FWIW, my dog was considerably less tall at 8 months and was about 40-45 lbs, IIRC.   My dog is a slower-growing boy, but has never had any growth issues like pano or poor joints, so I consider this to be a good thing.    The dog that you are considering is large for his size, IMO, and I would be wary of growth-related problems, but that may not be an issue at all.

@Koots- I put "standard size" in quotes because of that reason.  And I wouldn't think it would take a rocket scientist to come on here and just say either their dog grew very much after it turned 8 months old, that is merely what I've been asking here in this thread!  Regardless of pedigree or SL vs WL, I would think about everyone who's on this forum board has either raised, or watched someone else raise, a dog from pup up, and could be able to say whether he/she was pretty much done with their growth by that age. I think many people are trying to read too much into this post!  Its a pretty simple question to me. FWIW- the dog in question is prelim'ed A normal hips/0/0 elbows. I saw vet report.
