Ah, Quant ... now, there was a dog.
I don't entirely understand this thred, OGBS (though yours is a
fine idea about a non-quarrelsome subject !) - what is the magic
cut-off point of Gen 5 ?

Well I think there may be a point. I have a WGSL male. His sire is very typey WGSL, typical pedigree, lots of bigger names from the past 10-15 years. The oldest dog found in that part of his 5 gen pedigree is about 15 years younger than the oldest dog in the 5 gen of the dam line, which is also WGSL but primarly Kirschental dogs, some of them bred older (grand dam was 10 I believe). It just shows a difference between breeding dogs 2-4 years of age and how quickly the generations branch off.

Hundmutter,
I chose five generation pedigree because that is what most people look at in a pedigree when they are looking at things like linebreeding.
Certainly people look further back than that when looking at a pedigree, but, I had to cut it off somewhere.
VKGSD,
Your comment is what I was hoping for.
Getting information out of this without really knowing ahead of time what it would be.
Discovering and sharing information.
Thanks!

Jyota is 4 and her 5 generation pedigree goes back to 1977, but some do not have birth dates shown.

Plus, the 5 generation old pedigree shows which kennels ain't flipping dogs every 2 years...

I didn't think I would find anything of interest to contribute to this thread because both my dogs are so young, but just for fun I looked at the fifth generation dogs in Cisco's pedigree.
Imagine my surprise to find out that Cora vom Haarblick dam to Mink vom haus Wittfeld was born in 1972.
Mink was born in 1982.
That lead to wondering how many litters she had.
Another surprise....she had 3 litters...from 3 different sires.....each litter consisted of 1 puppy.
Also, 2 of the three litters were born in the same year 1975.
A 7 year spread between the first two and the last one....WOW.

I have been a lurker for a long time but just had to register since I finally found something I could comment on. I had GSD's almost all of my life until I got a paying job! so moved off the farm. Our dogs were working dogs on the farm. We had a son of Ch Tom von der Murrenhutte who was sired by Volker von Zollgrenzschutz- haus. In research I did through the old German Shepherd dog books by Goldbecker and Hart and others I can't remember now; I took parts of his pedigree back to Horand v Grafrath.I am not sure but I believe it was more than 20 generations. He was a great cattle and hog dog; probably one of the best dogs in my life and I have had many. He hated going to dog shows.
This was back in the '60's and early '70's.
I enjoy lurking even though I don't know much about all the different terms and lines now.
