Hired Dog

by Hired Dog on 18 December 2013 - 14:12

Ibrahim, until your dog actually bites a human with no equipment present, you dont know if he will bite or not, no one does. There is a huge difference between a dog that bites suits and sleeves and a dog that is willing to take on a human in shorts and a shirt. Again, until you see it with your own eyes, do not depend on it.
Oh, ALL "attacks" come out of aggression.

I get what you're saying hired dog, I have nothing to challenge, only thing I want to make sure you follow what I want to convey as I may be choosing inappropriate terms/words

Ok dog bites out of aggression

What I actually wanted to say is attack without reason, out of wrong temperament or wrong trait/training etc.

When guarding and a stranger beaks in and even provokes the dog, natural thing for a GSD in duty protecting its property is fight and bite, or at least bark, maybe backs up a little distance when attacked by the stranger, but keep eye on intruder and bark fiercely even if it does not engage and actually bite, but it should not run away and leave the whole farm to the stranger !!!

HD, I understand what you are saying. I also hope YOU understand what I am saying: pushing a young dog into defense too early in its training can ruin it and destroy its confidence. Okay, if the dog is a real hardass with excellent nerves, it will be okay. But your average sport dog may NOT be okay.

I've also talked to the people who rent out these guard dogs for construction sites, etc. The dogs ARE trained to guard. They don't just take totally green, untrained dogs and drop them off, and expect them to do the job.

Maybe your dog would guard my home on the first night, but in my experience, the MAJORITY of dog wouldn't. Not until they'd had a chance to settle in. I often do day boarding for dogs in my own home. Someone knocks on the door, my dogs start to bark. The newcomer rarely does, until he's been here a few times, and it starts to feel like home.

Ibrahim, if that's the situation, like I said above, your friend needs a new guard dog! This one does not have what it takes.

Ibrahim, there are so many variables to the scenario you described that its very hard to tell you what the dog is doing without being able to see the dog's body language. Yes barking, but, what does it sound like? Yes standing its ground, but, what does its body language scream, etc.
I fully understand what you are trying to convey Ibrahim, English is not my mother tongue either.

Sunsilver, I used to know a few people in the guard dog business 30 years a go and those dogs are all social misfits, none were trained. They were the kind of dogs with genetic issues that average people did not want or could handle and they were sold to guard dog companies that rented them by the month.

Ok, thank you so much, my questions were answered satisfactorily and things are clearer to me.

Slamdunc

I am a big dummy, there is just too much going on here for me to keep up with.

by Ibrahim on 18 December 2013 - 16:12

Slamdunc, if there is anything that you feel necessary to add you are most welcome, I trust your knowledge and expertise, for me "as a semi-illiterate on work and training" I take the word of Hired Dog and Sunsilver for granted unless I saw a different reading of the above dogs that makes better sense to me. No disrespect meant here to Sunsilver or Hired Dog.

I, too, would defer to Slamdunc. And I'd certainly listen to HD, too, though he and I are coming at things from a different perspective, and don't always agree on everything.

My training is more with pets and service dogs, not schutzhund or working dogs.
