I have had dogs all my life and up til 8 &1/2 years ago never crated, probably because I didn't understand fully the concept? Or up til then the dogs were just pets and not service dogs or working lines GSDs.But all three of my GSDs are crated when we're in the truck traveling, doesn't matter if it's 2 miles down to get gas or go to Lowes or taking a road trip.Reiker, 8 & 1/2 will still try to get in the crate before the others. He just loves it. And if I'm working outdoors or in my shop he is content to just lay in the crate with the door open. Anastacia, 17 mos the same. Like one of the persons abover stated, my pup, Arabella, 11 weeks is always crated indoors, always. I wouldn't call it "destructive behavior" per se, puppies are puppies! If the place isn't puppy proofed look out. They're all sleep and play, sleep and play. And then teething, and curious, it's a whole new BIG world and they want to chew, thrashh and just do the things puupies do. So for now until I know things are safe Bella is crated indoors.
The irony here is Reiker will stay on the bed maybe 10 mins max and boom he's gone. He'll pick either a place next to the bed but most of the time it's a place between us and the doors. Ana, (it's crazy how each has their own personality!), Ana will take the bed just like a human and out like a light, snoring so loud you have to wake her up just to tell her to be quite! Crating will always be a part of their lives, training etc., etc.
