Tala is my first sable. When she was first born she was dark dark, a lot like Euroshepherd was saying, that she looked like a black. Then when I got her at 8 weeks she was still really dark. Now at 4 months she's a lot lighter. Some of the lighter sables in the litter are getting darker. The breeder says that she'll get darker when she gets older.

Please someone correct me if I am wrong ?  I asked the same question, why no sable
to sable matings, and researched it a little - but all I could come up with at the time
was rather woolly 'because folks believe its a genetically weak combination and may
lead to health or temperament problems (never specified); or because you get more
neonatal deaths / fading puppies with sable to sable.'  There did seem to be a small
amount of statistical information to bear this second point out;  but some experts
were already starting to query those beliefs.

Hundmutter I've never heard that. I could be wrong, too. But I know several litters, including my pup's litter, that are sable to sable breedings that have produced excellent healthy pups. The fading I don't know, but I've seen previous litters similar to my pup who are sable to sable who aren't faded at all.

I was curious because my breeding is sable to sable... I had never read that before.  Anyone else have any input on that?

macrowe1... your baby is gorgeous.  You think she will keep that rich red?  I love red sables.

I don't believe sable to sable makes them any weaker or any more faded pigment then any other color. The reason I don't like breeding sable to sable--and this is a personal thing--is the sables that are produced can carry the gene that only produces sable--I can't spell it but I call it Homo Z................My boy is from a sable to sable breeding and he carries that gene--he is also very healthy and has nice pigment. He will be 8 in December and isn't even beginning to slow down.

There seem to have been many, many successful breedings of two sables by now;
mostly on your side of the Pond and mostly among the Working community.  So
I guess that if there were real problems connected with doing it, these would have
emerged.  Maybe this reluctance was simply old-fashioned, based on hearsay
rather than anything empirical.  (I have an idea I read that Dr Willis did not think
there was a real reason not to mate sable to sable;  I must look that reference up!)
Its a different world now, with faster communications, so although I set a lot of
store by much of the established advice & thinking, I also appreciate that some
things change as knowledge grows ...
