The whole story is now up on Doglost   http://www.doglost.co.uk/dog_blog.php?dogId=40287

I didn't want to mention the druggie relative until it was confirmed.  Makes your hair curl, bad enough he robbed the house, but to sell the dog!

Problem re microchips - (or tattoo numbers, for that matter) if the dog is sold out of its own home address as shown on the
paperwork, nobody, whether the purchaser, Vet, or anyone who kennels dogs on behalf of a local authority/just gets asked for help when purchaser finds they've bitten off more than they can chew, is going to presume the dog is stolen.  Even a petition asking for compulsory checking of (compulsary) microchips will not solve that one. (Although not to say automatic check isn't always a good idea;  even though currently it can be a waste of time because people so often don't bother to put ID on or in their dogs !)

Lucky that Margaret you are so experienced, your 'sixth sense' about this made you put 'two & two together' when speaking to Harvey, I'm sure.  Someone not as savvy or as long in GSDs might still not have spotted a connection ?

I guess the lesson to be learned here is that if you have someone house-sit for you, even if it is someone you should be able to trust, make sure the dogs' papers are put away somewhere really safe ?

Not sure what more the breeder of this particular dog could have done, either, though one or two comments on DogsLost
site lead me to believe folks were quick to apportion blame there as well ...

I can't believe the guy was able to get the dogs' papers - a very good reminder to keep those secure.
