I guess that there is worse than Purina One to put a dog on. But there are too many fillers in that product to pay the price for it. I'd rather stick with a higher-quality food. And most vets recommend Purina or Royal Canin because they stock those products and have a contract with them or Hill's. It's not necessarily that they're the best foods for your dogs, but why not recommend something that you're carrying? JMO

I agree with the sentiment that the price is not reflective of the quality.  You can find btter quality foods for less......at least where i live you can.  In fact Acana large Breed puppy is about the same as what you pay for Purina One where I live.

If there was no other option then I might choose it, but if there is a better option then I would give my puppies the best start and if there is a question of the new owner not being able to continue with the same food, then that is nothing that a gallon (or gallon and a half) ziplock full of the current dog food doesn't fix.  That amount of food is enough to be used to transition a puppy to new food.  The larg ziplocks hold about 15-20 cups of dogfood.

Because of this forum I switched my dogs to Orijen large breed puppy! WOW what a difference in ingredients! no corn.. no grains.. all real meat and even deboned fish !! wow these guys are eating better than we are! I, so far, am very happy with their small dark stools.. they arent fed as much and have put some fat on a lean female I had a hard time with weight issues !! I was feeding Eukanuba lg breed puppy for years.. but I have opened my eyes to what there is to offer out there in the natural food options! I am a tech for a vet and we get Science Diet and other Vet diets for literally pennies on the dollar! Thanks again for the advice on here!!

Thanks for the website DDRCzechFan.  This site has FROMM dog food at a reasonable price.

The arguement for the Purina is a good one though; ease of access to the buyer.  Based on that arguement, what is the opinion of the "off the shelf" dog foods below?   I do understand that these are not the best, just trying to get a little feed back on them from actual breeders and not "salesmen" trying to sell me something.

As I stated in PM, while others may find it to be "Crap" food, we've been feeding Pro Plan Performance for 8 yrs, brought
7 litters up on it and our dogs look and feel great. We feed raw in the am and kibble in the pm.

Tried grain free a few times and got tired of cleaning up cow pie poo after a month or so and switched back.

Feed what your dogs do good on. Not all dogs do good on the same foods.

I don't know who said TOTW was a top notch food....Orijen is the best, hands down, my experience.

Fawn,
I fed my last girl Pro Plan and she lived until 15 1/2 and was extremely healthy until the last week of her life.  My vet is also a big fan of Pro Plan as he said the expenside foods are always being recalled. He bred and raised goldens for decades all on Pro Plan.

With that said, I do feed Orijen dog food right now. But, I think your puppies would be fine on a food like Pro Plan!

I feed Eukanuba. Fed a locally milled food for 40 years, mostly corn. All dogs but 2 lived to be at least 13 and never saw the vet for being sick. Only one ate a different food, a mix I picked up off the street. She ate Gaines Burgers, died from natural causes at 23. Recently lost a co-owned champion. She ate Purina her whole life. She was 3 months shy of 15.

If you want to spend twice as much money on designer dog food, that's your decision. Not me.

Our Shih Tzu/Yorkie and my cat eat Purina One.

Originally we switched Yapper to something higher quality, as that is what our other dog at the time was on. Oddly enough, Yapper started going bald on his sides/butt. When our other dog died, we spoke to Yapper's previous owner and upon her advice switched him back to Purina One. Boom, his hair grew back. My dad boasts "Purina One put hair on Yapper's @ss!"

Cheyanne, my cat, has been bounced from brand to brand throughout her life. I tried just about everything to see what she does best on. She did very well on Eukanuba for awhile, but then when they recalled it we switched to some other quality food (I don't think it was Blue Buffalo, but seems like it started with a B?), then our store quit carrying it so I figured we'd try Purina One, and she has been on that since. Her coat is uber soft and thick and not dandruffy, and she is happy and healthy.

So I say go with what works for your pets.

My Shepherd is on Nature's Domain from Costco, though, it is on the recall list but thankfully the other flavor.

Thank you all for your input.  I greatly appreciate experienced input and not some trying to sell me something.

I think I will stick with Pro Plan for the pups.

In all fairness though, Rose, who is a very picky eater, will stay on FROMM.  May be way more expensive, but I can get her to eat it and it is better for her than Moist and Meaty or Dog Chow (the only ohter dog food she will eat).  We have tried just about everything else...

Thank you all again.
