Two Moons

The Sire and Dam have siblings as there Sire, brothers or cousins is splitting hairs.
It's too tight in my opinion either way.
So would Sire to daughter be a bit too tight.
At least skip a generation.
This is why the breed suffers today, this mentality.

Genotypes of siblings are never identical unless they are identical twins, a very unusual occurence in the dog world.

Moon, one could also argue that the breed suffers today from too much outcrossing that has diluted the gene pool and has made it almost impossible to consitently breed quality dogs. And that's another mentality.

I too would agree with duke1965 as I would rather breed on Ellute.

Ought to take darylehret up on his puppy swap offer!

Breed quality dogs are selected, diluting genes is where we are today through tunnel vision of many specific breeders.
Pedigree breeding has become way too common, and time tested selection seems too much bother.
The GSD was not meant to be just show, or just bite work, a working dog needs diversity and versatility.
Go back to the original standard and select from that to bring the breed back to what it once was.

--- I understand that, I'm just wondering about them being "very different."

Moon, if you want to go back to the future and if you can find dogs of the type you want, you will need to do some close linebreeding to set that type solidly in your gene pool. Otherwise, nothing changes.

Considering it's a random pairing of the genes and factoring in modifiers and all the other nuances of genetic inheritance that are foreign to me, I think it's possible that 2 sibs could have very different gene pools. The only proof of that I can offer is that I've seen brothers bred to the same bitch producing entirely different results in normal sized litters. Litter sisters bred to the same male, different results. Factor in the random pairing of the genes from the dog it is mated to and I think the odds of getting the same quality from littermates drops considerably. The odds get even worse if the mated dogs are unrelated for more than 3, 4 generations. That is why IMO linebreeding done right is an asset to a breeding program.

All I mean is selection has less to do with bloodlines and has everything to do with what you've got on the ground.
Selection through observation, evaluation, and time, not one particular line.
Titles are too easy for the select few to acquire and the process has been corrupt for many years.
A working dog is more than Schutzhund and hell and gone from show.
Why are GSD's no longer used for seeing eye dogs?
Why are mal's being selected for military and police over GSD's now?
Why must there be one or the other, show, working (which means biting), or pet?
Where is Intelligence, health, and temperament in the selection process?
Oh well, this argument is as old as the last world war and loss of herding.
