There has been a lot of knowledge and experience shared which is greatly appreciated. Personally, I liked both show lines & working lines but so far I prefer the old Czech dogs from the research I have done. With that being said, having owned German Shepherds (American Lines) since I was a child, I now have an Import IPO 1 female I purchased in Feb. here in the states.
As was stated above by Red Sable finding a breeder or referral that is tust worthy is a different story since I don't personally know anyone in this buisness. there are not any working line breeders/kennels in this area (Alabama).

How do you like your IPO  1 female?  What is her breeding?

If you are looking for a specific kind of dog, maybe someone on here could help steer you in the right direction. : )

Hi I agree with everyones post on this thread, Health is vitally important. i thought I could contribute with what I am personally looking for in a dog. I will focus on the character traits that should be visible between 8-12 weeks of age:

I think you would want a Confident, alert, intelligent, sociable, competitive, aggressive and stable dog.  In my reasearch I have found out that the best tests to do, for me anyways, to spot these traits are the following:

1) How does the dog respond to unique stimulus. For example how does the dog react when a new toy is introduced into its pen or a loud sound is made. The ideal puppy will show interest in the new object or sound and would want to investigate it. this shows a level of confidence.

2) how does a pup react when left alone (isolated). the ideal puppy would show a great deal of exploratory behaviour.

3) How does the puppy respond to strangers. the ideal pup should be friendly and gregarious

4) does the pup have a competative spirit. this can be tested by simulating an aggressive play situation with a rag. initiate a tug of war with the pup, you want a pup with a good strong bite and pull. Also note the pups reaction to a shout by the handler, the ideal pup would be so caught up in the fun of bitting and pulling that it would be virtually oblivious to what the handler does.

5) how does puppy tackle problem solving, a puppy can be placed behind a transparent barrier such as chicken wire and you should note its behaviour when called. the ideal puppy should show a desire to get to the handler and be persistent until he finds a way around the obstacle.

I hope this was of helps. It is what I am personally looking for in a pup, however I intend to do sports with my pup. Best of luck
