Hello,  I am not a breeder nor am I an expert with dogs. I've been told that a few times in this forum. I'm just a dog lover and I am a very conscientious owner. One of the best dogs we ever had was a black GSD/Lab mix. He was very smart and was the best babysitter I ever had with my 2 little boys. He watched them and went with them as far as they were allowed to go by our house. He was easy going unless he thought something wasn't right. I believe he would have hurt someone if he thought we were in danger.  This dog may have been held down and that's what made him timid. If you played with him and praised him he might just surprise you.  BUT!!  I  would ask that you take seriously your decision to take him. If you take him and tell him that he's home and then you decide you don't want him, it will break his heart. Dogs do not like change and it's hard enough for them to deal with that, but then to be moved again is very hard on them. I have no doubt you will have a true friend  in this dog but if you want a sure thing in this training, it might be best to get a dog that's been bred to it. If you can just accept this dog and accept what he is willing or able to achieve, then go for it. But either way just love him as he is.
