I have a 7 month old female gsd right now and she is pretty friendly towards most people, but not so friendly towards dogs she does not know.  Just today, a friend of my daughter's came over to visit and was greeted by all 3 of our gsds at the door in a friendly manner; they all know that I only open the door and let friends enter.  Sounds like your dog's behavior is normal.

To me the issue is not that the dog is social but that the dog is jerking you around and not focusing on you?  IMO, even with a social GSD the owner/handler should be the primary focus.  My dogs all like people and are accepting of any non-threatening people but I don't allow them to ignore me and dash up to anyone on the street.  It sounds like you're doing training already so over time the dog will bond with you and learn to focus on you.  Work on developing a strong relationship with the dog so the dog wants to be with you more than anyone else.

yeah please correct me if i am wrong but the older they get they become more aloof usually dont they? like at 2 they dont act like the puppy they did at 1

i know it all depends on the indivudal some never grow out of it some will guess depends on genetics

my dog at 14 months will sniff people and let them pet her but she wont run up to strangers or leave me for anyone she only will sniff if she walks by someone or if i approach someone to chat with

but shes  a lot older maybe she was like ur dog at that age

Sonya,

Being a puppy is fine, but you must also keep her SAFE....if she is dragging you and running across the road, then it sounds like safety can be an issue. A larger dog, or a car, can harm your puppy. If you are having trouble controlling her excitement, then you might need a prong collar for walks. JMO.....enjoy her!!!!!! I LOVE my girl!!!!!!!

I agree, working dog or pet you have to have safty first
My pup used to wanna chase cars. So I brought her to a busy street, gave her about 3-4 feet of loose leash, planted my feet & just stood there. When she would hit the end of the leash it would snap her back, I would call her to me & give her treats & praise. After so many times she started getting the hint, I would start calling her sooner right before the car got to us, give her a treat & praise. I slowly phased out the treats & just used praise. She stil gets excited when she sees a car but doesnt chase. If I call her she comes to me for good stuff & she learned chasing a moving car makes things uncomfortable
This might not be the best way for you but worked for me :)  Good luck

When my pup was younger she was like that with 98% of people. And I thought she was over friendly. But a few people one specific neighbor she is very alert to. And has she has gotten older she is more aloof but she isjust a friendly dog. Let her be a puppy but you should work on control for the dog and your safety.

SonyaBullinger : where did you get your puppy from bc? my puppy  is almost 7 months too.
was it from a breeder in nanaimo?

and to ask another question, my puppy is in shz training. and he has a really high defensive drive in him.
for example when were going for a walk. hell be scared alittle then start parking alot. and stand beside me the whole time. i've been trying to correct it. ive been trying to get him to sit, and pet him and let people come and pet him, so he understands its ok. and there nothing wrong about people to come and say hi.

any more suggestions?
