Yes prices SHOULD come in to it, no other industry I know are so lacking in regulatuon.

Metacam.   -  our old boy is "cranky" around his back and needs it daily.   knowing he could go on until he is the age of Methusilla the way he eats, I decided to ask my vet if I could have a prescription and get the same amount from the internet via his prescription.

I informed him that I was not a penny pincher, but as this lad could be on it for life in a low dose, £68.50 per bottle was a lot of money and on the internet the same amount was £28.90.

He huffed and puffed, but knew that he was obliged to agree.  He said he would let me know.   He did let me know, rather than me buy from the internt - he offerred it at £26.50  !!!    I now buy 180mls of Metacam for £26.50 each time from my vet - dont tell me he is losing money - so whatever was the £68 plus price about for the months that I have paid it.

The sad thing is that this perfectly good and efficient vet has made me doubt him in other ways now.  What price professionalism.   Mo.

Thanks for the link Ambi.

Robust is not the first adjective that springs to my mind, when thinking of the RCVS and how they deal with complaints!  Of course no mention of the exorbitant charges... I guess they're acceptable to them?

Our OOH is a company called "Black Dragon" (no kidding) their charges are eye watering... they wanted to charge me £2,000:00 for a torsion at 8 o'clock in the evening... they hadn't even examined my dog!  Yes, I wrote to the RCVS and the BVA... not a jot of interest, just the standard replies, shocking!

Worth a campaign for price guide lines?  I think so... anyone got any idea how one goes about this?

Dead easy... everyone stop paying for pet insurance.... put the money you would normally pay into a savings account, and ask for prescriptions and buy online from Canine Chemists etc.

:D

I haven't yet seen the programme (recorded) but as someone else said, I am so thankful that I have an ethical, skilled and helpful vet. I do have pet insurance, and wouldn't want to be without it. However, if it is something not covered by insurance and in the past I have asked for private prescriptions, especially when many years ago I had one of my dogs on Cyclosporin. Never ever had a problem with getting a private prescription.

One of the many reasons I admire my vet: One of my chickens was attacked by a rat and had a badly damaged leg - definitely couldn't be saved. My vet asked whether or not I would consider amputation rather than euthanasia, which is what I was prepared for. I was concerned as to how she would manage, and also about the cost. We discussed it at length, and he asked me whether cost was an issue, and I said well to some degree yes it is, and he said what if I do the operation and charge a maximum of £50?

So we did amputate her leg, and she manages perfectly well (that was 8 months ago) and the final total bill was exactly £50.00 ! He was more concerned with saving her life than profit, and she is just a little 'unimportant' chicken. That's priceless to me.
