I think more along the lines of Hans, that it teaches people they don't have to take responsibility, and worse, that it gives them an easier out that isn't just enabling the behavior, but to a small degree even encouraging the behavior.  Kind of like passing out contraceptives in gradeschool.

Hi Hans,
I appreciate your point of view...I only do it for the dogs' sake, to hell with the people...
I question myself sometimes too, but I have gotten 5 of the best dogs because of this situation....or the dogs being dumped in shelters...that is where I get most of the dogs. We are not going to change people's way of thinking, it is a disposable society....unfortunately...so I try to think of the dog, most people don't know what they are getting, so at least I can screen the people for the right dog...
This particular bitch, I tried to get the people to keep her for several weeks now, and work with her or put in a different fence system, or move, they can afford it....but no the dog goes....

I have tried to stop doing rescue, several times but I have trouble saying no to the dogs, not the people....hope that explains somewhat...I guess I do it for the dogs...

One of the dogs I have is a retired dual purpose police K-9, Adis. He was at the pound to be PTS....after serving us for 9 yrs...he was to be PTS....I went down to Salt Lake City, Utah to get him and he is my best bud!!!! I don't know what I would do without him, he is probably 11 now, but still in excellent health. A Czech import dog I can't let alot of people around him, because of the liability, but I love this dog and he loves me, he goes everywhere with me, since I travel alone so much getting these dogs, I know he would protect me with his life. We have an understanding...the officer that was going to keep him, went through a divorce and couldn't keep him...just one example...

Also I have a Malinois guy, that I rescued, 3 brothers, kept one dark red sable...he would protect me also...most of my dogs I guess would...
Here is Adis clearing my front gate...this pic has been on here before...Steph

Yes all of the above is true;  but  in the end you have to think about the dogs;  it's about the dogs and helping the dogs not the people.  _uck the people;  save the dogs.  Nanci

Daryl,
The people will  get rid of the dog one way or another. Whether it is at the pound or selling on Craig's list or giving away in the paper, all of the above are still being done.

So if there were no rescue groups out there, the pounds would be putting dogs to sleep right and left...
Breeders would keep breeding and dogs would be constantly be PTS...what is different with rescue groups or not, breeders keep supplying, people dump dogs....good ones too...

At least the people that call the rescue groups want to find a better home than one in the paper...yes it may be a cop out for the people, but like I said, they are going to dump it one way or another. And as you probably know, GSD's don't do well in shelters. They get defensive of their kennel and don't show well, so many of them are put to sleep...

I try very hard to educate the people, it doesn't do any good....only once or twice have I been able to rehabilitate the people.
I have one in right now for training from South Dakota....trying to retrain the dog and the guy to keep the dog.
All I can do is try and all I do it for is THE DOGS.....
I CARE ABOUT THEM MORE THAN MOST PEOPLE...BUT THAT IS JUST ME...!!!!!

Thing is, if the rescue or shelter weren't available, I'd bet more than half (or even most) of these people would buck up and TAKE responsibility, because they don't have the nerve to PTS and someone else is offering them a clean conscience that lets them imagine some happy fairytale ending for the dog without ever looking back.  Cultural perspective could change if there weren't "enablers" alleviating responsibility from others.  But the "enableing" must stop, for that to ever occur.

I used to donate 10% of my income to the local shelter (Bozeman) every year.  Tell me, are things any better six years later?  Much worse, would be my guess.  Only Oprah can fix this one, I guess.  I don't have the answer, but to stop the shelters would require legislative action and a mass shift in public perception about what effect they truly have on our society.

What I want to do , and have spoken to my mayor and local GSD rescue, is to start educating the children... How many rescues actualy go to schools to give free symposiums to teach kids how to care for dogs, and show them how cool it can be to teach a dog a trick ? Not many if any !!
I hear alot of complaining from rescues , complaining from breeders etc.. yet no one is out there trying to tech Joe Public responciblity of ownership!!! This is not a breeder or rescue issue.. as said above the PEOPLE who are uneducated and feel backed agianst a wall are looking to dump there dogs ... why ?? Because there dog never got training and often they don't know how to work the dog or even the basics on care.

I am a bit away from being able to do this alone.. I have spoken to our police cheif and mayor about it but they said its entierly up to me to get a program together to be able to do this.. Please anyone contact me with some ideas- this should have a nation wide effect. It would take minimal effort from breeders and rescues alike to get programs together and get a script , get dogs with either CGCs or passing basic obediance, to dimonstrate at schools .
