dcook49: I have a light colored gsd too and often get asked if she is a purebred. You might want to look at this thread: http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/forum.read?mnr=173097.

I have had people look for black/tans, others look for sables and some only want blacks. It is all personal preference. Honestly I have never had trouble selling sables... and some pet people do not even realize there is a difference when looking at the litter - other than one puppy is "darker" than the other LOL
I have heard some say that sables are harder to sell... then others say that they are easy or see no difference.
For me, it wouldnt even be a factor for me. If someone wants to pass up an awesome sable puppy, thats their choice and someone else will be happy to have him/her :)

The average joe out to get their first GSD has no idea there is anything other than a black/red saddle back and are always amazed when we tell them that, yes, indeed, the sables and the black and the bicolor are all registered purebred GSDs
Count me as one of them. I had no damn idea 1-1/2 years ago.

I had a vet tech a while back think that my female was part keeshound because of her coloring.. She is a dark sable. She is the one in my avitar.

I don't think there is the prejudice in U.S. against sables as in Europe. I had a few very good placings in U.S. under SV judges that I could not have come close to in Europe.
Coming from the background I do, I think it is very incorrect to label dogs as to color. Randy Brent's dog is excellent as to s/l conformation, yet he is here in the U.S. and not China because of his color.

So in the end, I guess it all boils down to what people "think" a gsd's colors "should be." Rik was right in choosing the word "prejudice."
