Well Kalibeck you can whine all you want and we will listen;  But now I am going to make you laugh.  After spending 12 weeks in UC Davis medical intervention after my accident I came home to MY DOGS and of course my husband.  The trip home was tiring and long but we made it fine as they had been preparing me for getting in and out of cars with a GIANT halo, etc.

I got home and was starved as if you want to loose weight, go to UC Davis and TRY  to eat their food.  I had not had a home cooked meal for 12 weeks and was pretty hungry.  The hub's NOT being much of a cook and a local restaurant which cooked a favorite omeletlte of mine gave me the idea of a chili and cheese omelete which I knew the hubs probably had eggs.  So my chili and cheese omelete was delivered to me post haste only it was a campbells' pork and bean omelete;  dry toast no jelly on a plate.  Jesus it tasted like well you can imagine but I decided that I needed to eat it as best I could.  So I did and I don't think I ate for the next 2-3 days.    Asked if we could have an aid come in to help me from that point on.  Which we did for the next few months to help with it all.

Jest of the story, I definitely know how much you contribute to your household so please ask for help.  Feel better soon,  Nan

I second Nan's directive:  you, of all people, are surely entitled to the services of a medically skilled caregiver, after all the aid you've provided for others all these years!  Don't hesitate to request the assistance due you, if not for your own sake, then consider it for Carl's sake...I'm sure he could use an extra set of hands around the re, with you out of commission for a bit.  It will benefit both of you!

I'm horrified that they sent you home without ensuring your bladder function was undisturbed post-op; in every instance where the patient has had a surgical procedure with general anesthesia--especially abdominal surgery!--the patient was always told they had to urinate on their own [and allow the staff to see the proof] before they were allowed to be discharged.  I certainly would have expected that in your case!  As others have pointed out, though, it may be for the best that you were able to be home, in your own bed and with Carl and the dogs tending to you...less chance of picking up something nosocomial that way.

Am relieved that they were able to get you straightened out, and I winced as you described the trip to and from the hospital...your level of exhaustion has to be off the charts!  Rest, rest, and rest some more, and snuggle with Ansgar; this would be a perfect time to catch up on some cable tv series, such as Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Nurse Jackie, etc., that you've wanted to see...you can borrow the DVDs from most libraries, and then just sit back and have yourself a view fest.

Thoughts and prayers still shooting in your direction!

Jackie I have only just read this and it goes without saying that I wish you well and you will be in my thoughts. It's not only the fact you have to recover from major surgery but your mind also has to recover from the shock of being told you have cancer. That I found the hardest to accept, especially having lost both parents to cancer.

I am in my 6th year of remission this month from having breast cancer, 'luckily' it was a slow growing one and after surgery and the testing of lymph nodes it was diagnosed as Stage One and I only had to have 20 odd sessions of radiotherapy.  I was in hospital for a total of 6 hours when I had the breast surgery...

I wish you all the best for your recovery and may it go without any complications x

I keep wanting to answer folks individually with pm's, but the last few days have been rough. I will answer everyone, but it may take some time, I hope you understand...! My body just doesn't seem to work the way it used to, & it's taking some getting used to. Mostly, as Hexe said, I'm just exhausted! So please bear (bare?) with me, I will get back to every one. I am so touched & encouraged by your support! You all are the best!

Jackie, I'm so sorry you feel so awful. I really feel for you. My mom had abdominal surgery for late stage 3  ovarian cancer when she was 87 years old.  The first two weeks post op were really rough and I remember thinking she was so bad that she'd never be able to pull out of it and fully recover, but she did and she went on to enjoy life to its fullest. You will too!

Not to worry about anything Jackie except getting better and regaining your strength.  Sending well wishes your way.  The crew...

Hi Jackie
You are going through a really rough time, the pot may be a bit more crocked than it was....for now. But it will regain it's former use and still retains it's unique patina and charm. Hope your dreams are less disturbed now.
